New Music: Janelle Monáe f/ Erykah Badu – ‘Q.U.E.E.N.’

Ladies stand up. Janelle Monáe jams with Erykah Badu on the funky female anthem “Q.U.E.E.N.,” the first release from her upcoming album The Electric Lady.

The song comes with instructions from Janelle. “Q.U.E.E.N. was inspired by private discussions between Erykah and me. It is meant to make you JAM. DANCE. FUNK OUT. and dialogue later…” she tweeted.

The Electric Lady marks the follow-up to Janelle’s 2010 critically-acclaimed album The ArchAndroid.

Brandy, Alicia Keys, & Erykah Badu Perform at BET Honors

BET celebrated icons in the fields of music, literature, entertainment, media, and education at BET Honors, which aired during Black History Month.

Taped last month in Washington, D.C., the 6th annual event honored Oscar winner Halle Berry, the legendary Chaka Khan, music executive and entrepreneur Clarence Avant, spiritual educator T.D. Jakes, and Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie, with musical tributes from Brandy, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, and more.

A barefoot Brandy staged the first televised performance of her new single “Without You” with dancer Anthony Burrell. Alicia Keys honored Halle Berry with “Brand New Me,” while Erykah Badu and Ledisi paid homage to Chaka Khan. Plus, Mint Condition serenaded Clarence Avant with their hits “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” and “Slo Woman.”

Alicia Keys, Brandy, Kelly Rowland, & Erykah Badu Salute Icons at BET Honors

The ladies of music and Hollywood represented at the 6th annual BET Honors at Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. Brandy, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, and more were on hand to perform musical tributes to icons in the fields of music, literature, entertainment, media, and education.

This year’s honorees included Oscar winner Halle Berry, the legendary Chaka Khan, music executive and entrepreneur Clarence Avant, spiritual educator T.D. Jakes, and Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie.

Alicia Keys ignited the stage with a red-hot performance of “Brand New Me,” while the newly-engaged Brandy performed “Without You” off her album Two Eleven. Kelly Rowland presented the award to Chaka Khan, and Ledisi saluted the 10-time Grammy winner with a soulful set.

BET Honors 2013 will air during Black History Month on February 11.

Erykah Badu takes flight with Flying Lotus on “See Thru to U,” the first single off his album Until the Quiet Comes, due October 2. The neo-soul songstress adds her soothing vocals to the jazzy track, which FlyLo describes as “a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep, and lullabies.”

Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, & Erykah Badu Celebrate Women at ‘Black Girls Rock!’

Music’s biggest voices saluted black women in business, politics, entertainment, sports, and community service at BET’s second annual “Black Girls Rock!” event, honoring Angela Davis, Shirley Caesar, Taraji P. Henson, Tatyana Ali, and more.

Erykah Badu kicked off the festivities by beat-boxing and adding her own instrumentation to “Appletree.” Melanie Fiona showed off her powerful pipes with her new song “This Time,” newcomer Elle Varner stepped into the spotlight with “Only Wanna Give It to You,” and Estelle said “Thank You” with her Akon-penned single.

Soul diva Jill Scott delivered a spoken word performance of “Womanifesto” and empowered her fellow ladies with “Hate on Me.” And Mary J. Blige closed out the inspiring evening with “Just Fine” and “My Life.”
