Eve Gives Props to Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks

Eve

Fresh off reuniting with DMX at Rock the Bells, Eve caught up with Fuse to discuss the resurgence in female hip-hop. She once again vocalized her support for her fellow femcees Azealia Banks and Diamond.

“I like Azealia Banks,” said Eve of the “212” rapper. “Some of her lyrics are real cute. Plus, she’s in the fashion world. That’s my religion.”

In spite of what rumors may suggest, she has no problem with Nicki Minaj. “I like Nicki, man. People want me to not like her, but there’s nothing not to like. She found a lane and she’s living in it and she’s doing her thing. Why not?”

Eve for one doesn’t pay attention to what others think of her. “I live in a bubble,” she said. “I shouldn’t, but I do. Ultimately, if I worried what people were thinking about me, I couldn’t be who I am. It is what it is. I don’t prove anything to anyone but myself.”

The Philly femcee’s first album in 10 years, Lip Lock, is due later this year. “I’m always chasing me, I’m not chasing nothing else.”

DMX and Eve Reunite at Rock the Bells

DMX and Eve

DMX reunited with his fellow Ruff Ryder Eve on stage at the Rock the Bells festival on Saturday in San Bernardino, Calif. The hip-hop veteran opened his 20-minute joint set with “We Right Here,” sweating through classics from his catalog including “Party Up (Up in Here)” and “Slippin’.”

Six minutes into his set, he brought out Eve for “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.” “Give it up for the First Lady of Ruff Ryders,” said X. He closed with a prayer before turning over the stage to E-V-E.

“Where my ladies at?” asked the Philly raptress, who performed “Hot Boyz,” “What Ya’ll Want,” and “Who’s That Girl?” She also spit a verse over Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Ni**as in Paris” beat. “These bitches in debt better pay their tax,” she rapped before ending her brief set with her 2001 hit “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”

Eve Shakes Up ESSENCE Festival

Eve

Eve strutted back to the stage during the ESSENCE Music Festival at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday. The Philly MC had the crowd dancing along as she performed her hits including “Love Is Blind,” “Who’s That Girl?,” and “Tambourine,” for which she was joined by Ms. Rose the “Tambourine Lady.”

The 33-year-old rapper is eyeing a fall release for her oft-delayed album Lip Lock. “I wanted to really take what people loved of me and fell in love with in the beginning, with the Ruff Ryders and all of them, and combine it with where I am now,” she told TIME of her first album since 2002’s Eve-Olution.

When it comes to her favorite new female rappers, Azealia Banks tops her list. “I like her style, I think she’s really cute, I think lyrically she’s really good and she’s really different,” said Eve. “She’s probably at the top of my list. But then there’s a girl named Diamond who is from Atlanta who I really like, just as a person and an artist, I think she’s really cool.”

Eve Returns to Her Roots in Reebok Documentary [Video]

Eve

Eve returned home to Philadelphia to shoot a mini-documentary for Reebok Classics and Complex. As the subject of the first film in the series, the hip-hop diva shared what it took for her to become a true “Classic.” Cameras followed E-V-E as she visited her old haunts on South Street, spoke to students at her former high school (Martin Luther King Jr.), and performed an intimate concert at Kung Fu Necktie in North Philly.

She reminisced about working with Gwen Stefani and her first album in a decade. “I think my biggest thing about doing this record was bridging the gap between what people loved about me from the beginning with the Ruff Ryders to where I am now, the crossover records,” she said. “There’s enough on there for people who just want to hear me go hard and spit, and then there’s the radio-friendly records.”

Ride out with Eve in the documentary, which features commentary from Swizz Beatz as well as Eve’s mother and cousin.
