Kendrick Lamar, Azealia Banks, & Frank Ocean Make TIME’s Top Albums of 2012

Kendrick Lamar

It’s that time of the year again when critics start sharing their favorites from the past 12 months. TIME has compiled a list of their top 10 everything including albums and songs.

Kendrick Lamar’s debut good kid, m.A.A.d city comes in at No. 2, with the magazine proclaiming the 25-year-old as “the most promising artist in hip-hop,” while Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE and Azealia Banks’ 1991 EP also make the cut.

The top songs chart is more surprising. Nicki Minaj’s “Roman in Moscow” didn’t make her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but it did receive recognition from critics. “This gloriously deranged throwaway encapsulates what’s great about the rapper,” writes TIME.

However, it was Usher who took it to the “Climax” as TIME‘s top song of 2012.

See the full lists below and weigh in with your thoughts.

Frank Ocean Models for GQ, Addresses ‘Coming Out’ Letter

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean doesn’t do many interviews, but the reclusive singer granted GQ some face time and a photo shoot for the magazine’s “Men of the Year” issue. Ocean, who changed his name from Lonny Breaux to Christopher Francis Ocean, opened up about his incredible year and bombshell announcement that rocked the hip-hop and R&B world (“The night I posted [the letter], I cried like a fu**ing baby,” he says).

Frank has a lot on his plate these days—he’s writing a song for Quentin Tarantino’s western film Django Unchained, new music for Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, and his own third album. Plus, the video game fanatic is thinking about opening his own arcade and plotting a European tour, which he wants to model after Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” tour.

In the photos, he models winter sport coats alongside his Odd Future groupmates Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt at a car shop (Frank is a BMW enthusiast) and Farmers Market in L.A.

Rihanna, Frank Ocean, Big Sean, Cassie, & Diddy Celebrate GQ’s ‘Men of the Year’

Rihanna and Frank Ocean

Rihanna celebrated her GQ “Men of the Year” cover at a star-studded bash in Hollywood last night. The “Diamonds” singer, who was named “Obsession of the Year” by the men’s magazine, stole the show in a slinky red Calvin Klein mini, toasting with her fellow honorees Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum.

Big Sean kept it player in a one-of-one Katie Eary shirt and red adidas sneakers, Kid Cudi and Ne-Yo looked fresh out of the pages of GQ, and even the elusive (and tipsy) Frank Ocean came out to party with RiRi at Chateau Marmont. Jamie Foxx was snapped grabbing Rihanna’s digits, while Cassie snuggled up with her man Diddy in VIP.

Check out more pics from the glamorous affair below.

Frank Ocean Reflects on Love, Religion, and Oreos in Open Letter

Frank Ocean

From penning a novel about twins to starting his own car club, the always honest Frank Ocean is opening up to his fans about what’s on his mind in a new letter posted on his Tumblr page.

“I’ve possibly lost all religion. I’ve sunken into passivity in certain areas of my life,” muses the “Thinkin Bout You” singer on deep subjects along with random thoughts like, “I eat steaks again now” to “Oreos don’t work with almond milk.”

He also speaks about his recent studio session with Jay-Z and Pharrell (“I wonder how many trophies are lodged in their minds”), moving from L.A. to New York or Tokyo, and lessons in love (“The number one rule in relationships is to never just leave”).

While candid, the letter is nowhere near as revelatory as the one he penned earlier this year, in which he told the world that he had once loved a man. Since then, fans have embraced the Odd Future member for his truthfulness and his popularity has only grown.
