Janelle Monáe Unleashes ‘Electric Lady’ on ‘Arsenio’

Janelle Monáe

Hot on the heels of her “SNL” and “Black Girls Rock!” performances, Janelle Monáe brought her funky sound to “Arsenio” on Monday night. The singer, who is currently on a headlining tour, shut down the stage with an explosive performance of her ladies’ anthem “Electric Lady” off her album of the same name.

During the interview, she explained the lyrics behind her song “Dorothy Dandridge Eyes.” “We just wanted to pay homage to Dorothy Dandridge,” said Janelle of her duet with Esperanza Spalding. “Not only was Dorothy beautiful, but she was an activist. She really did open up doors for women of color.”

She also spread her message of female unity and empowerment. “I think it’s important that other females show appreciation for other females. We need each other.”

Watch the Electric Lady shake up late night with her style and stage presence.

Video: Janelle Monáe f/ Miguel – ‘PrimeTime’

Miguel and Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe loves in the future in the emotion picture for “PrimeTime,” her sultry collaboration with Miguel. The singers play lovers in the dark and stylized video, which is set in a Blade Runner-like world.

“‘PrimeTime’ is a love story based on the early adventures of Cindi Mayweather (Janelle Monáe) and her first love Joey Vice (Miguel),” said Janelle of the Alan Ferguson-directed clip. “The Emotion Picture gives a glimpse at Cindi’s humble beginnings as a ‘cyber-server’ at the Electric Sheep nightclub, a syn bar serving high-class ‘show droids’ to the rich and lonely in a dangerous section of Metropolis known as Slop City.”

She continued, “Incidentally, the innovative cybersoul music played at the club directly impacted Cindi, and she began singing and performing her own innovative compositions a short time after quitting this assignment. In addition, Cindi became determined to change the public perception of what an electric lady could be, dream and aspire to after working in the dismal conditions at the club.”

The song is taken from Janelle’s latest album The Electric Lady, which debuted at No. 5 last month.
