New Music: Lupe Fiasco – ‘Mission’


Lupe Fiasco stands up to cancer on “Mission,” the first single off his upcoming album Tetsuo and Youth. The fighters’ anthem kicks off with a powerful narrative from cancer patients and survivors including Charlie Wilson, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008.

“‘Mission’ is a track to empower those facing cancer, revere cancer survivors, and remember those who have passed to due to cancer-related illnesses,” he explains.

“With an inspiring introduction from various cancer survivors telling their story, anchored by legendary singer/songwriter and cancer survivor Charlie Wilson, ‘Mission’ has Lupe Fiasco expressing stories of the emotional burden of cancer, while also working to uplift those in an effort to help fight the disease.”

Lupe has teamed up with Stand Up to Cancer as a celebrity ambassador. Together, they are planning collaborations tied to the track that will be unveiled later this year.

Single Cover: Lupe Fiasco – ‘Mission’


Tetsuo season is upon us. Lupe Fiasco is finally ready to unleash “Mission,” the first single off his upcoming album Tetsuo and Youth. The Chicago rapper has unveiled the illustrated cover art, which was designed by artist Hebru Brantley.

“This song meant a lot to me and I’m happy to be apart of this project,” said Brantley.

Lupe has also set up a website,, with a countdown to the premiere on Monday, May 19.

His fifth album Tetsuo and Youth is due later this year. “I must say it is a thematic & utterly lyrical masterclass,” said Lupe of the follow-up to 2012′s Food & Liquor II. “A grand result of 15 years of trial & error and dedication to the craft.”

Following “$nitches,” “$nitches 2 (30′s),” and “DopeBoysAtAllStarWeekend,” the Chicago spitter links with TDE’s Ab-Soul on “Thorns & Horns.” The lyricists demand respect as they exchange mean verses over a sinister chopped-and-screwed beat, produced by Floss & Fame.

“Amateurs get locked out / We janitors with the mops out / Clean house / I used to wanna be the GOAT, but I’m the ox now,” raps Lupe.

Lupe Fiasco offers a taste of his upcoming album Tetsuo & Youth with “$nitches,” his collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign.

The Chicago MC puts the gold diggers and groupies on notice (“Keep an open mind, but I ain’t messin’ with the doorstops”) on the radio-friendly record, which samples OutKast’s “Rosa Parks.”

Ty, who also produced the track, lays down the smooth hook. “I ain’t trickin’ on you,” he sings over the snapping beat.
