Azealia Banks, Diddy, and Nicki Minaj React to Eric Garner Decision

Eric Garner

Just eight days after the Michael Brown non-indictment, a New York City grand jury declined to bring criminal charges in the death of Eric Garner, a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold by a white police officer.

People took to the streets in cities across the country to protest the decision, while the hip-hop community took to social media to voice its opinion. Diddy was overcome with emotion as he shared his thoughts on Instagram, while his girlfriend Cassie sent her condolences to the Garner family. John Legend was stunned, Questlove was ashamed, and Macklemore demanded that police be held accountable for their actions.

“It’s challenging to imagine how this could happen and be excused,” said the Seattle rapper, who marched for Mike Brown in Seattle.

Q-Tip took action by organizing a demonstration in Union Square, and B.o.B called for unity and change.

Never one to bite her tongue, Azealia Banks went on an impassioned rant about race and called out Iggy Azalea for remaining silent.

Kendrick Lamar Talks New Album, Working with Pharrell, & Macklemore’s Text

Kendrick Lamar

During his visit to New York to prepare for his November 15 appearance on “SNL,” Kendrick Lamar stopped by “Ebro in the Morning” on Hot 97. Rocking an “i” hat to cover his longer hair (“I’m just in the studio. I ain’t got time to look cute”), he spoke about everything from Lady Gaga and Macklemore to his new single “i” and upcoming album.

He’s been in the studio with Dr. Dre and Pharrell (“We went in and did a few records”), but he’s working mostly with in-house producers. “I really stick with four producers that I’ve been working with since day one,” he said. “I don’t really go outside the box of that—Sounwave, Thundercat, Rahki, Tae Beast.”

The follow-up to his critically-acclaimed debut good kid, m.A.A.d city will encompass his diverse tastes. “It’s really been a process about me grabbing from these different types of inspirations that I’ve been growing up off of and putting them into my own batch of hip-hop,” said K-Dot.

Kendrick, who doesn’t smoke and occasionally drinks wine, revealed that he wants to have a big family one day. “I love kids. I wanna have like 10 kids.”

He also called out Macklemore for publicly sharing a text conversation they had following the Grammys. “I think it was uncalled for,” he said.

Video: Fences f/ Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – ‘Arrows’

Fences

The rise and the fall. Macklemore chronicles his journey in the cinematic video for “Arrows,” the lead single from Seattle artist Fence’s upcoming debut Lesser Oceans.

Directed by Jason Koenig and award-winning photographer John Keatley, the visually-stunning clip was shot in Seattle over the course of a week.

“From a day dream to a warehouse. This is video is my entire aesthetic embodied,” said Fences’ Christopher Mansfield. “I lost a friend and found love and was killed by an arrow. I hope you all get lost in the world we built.”

Macklemore added, “This music video was our baby. And we raised that baby. We put hella time, love, and energy into that kid of ours. Dozens of all-nighters and studio sleep overs to make sure that kid was the best it could be before we put it out into the world, gave the kid some shoes and told our child to run. Run into the world. Show them who you are. You deserve to be free, baby.”

Lesser Oceans arrives October 14.
