Bow Wow, JD, and Usher

The stars came out to salute Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, and Mike WiLL Made-It during the 27th Annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday night.

Following previous recipients Alicia Keys, Jay Z, and Pharrell, Ne-Yo was honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award. The R&B hitmaker received a star-studded musical tribute from Mario, who performed his Ne-Yo-penned No. 1 single “Let Me Love You,” while Jennifer Hudson serenaded him with “Spotlight” and “Why Is It So Hard.”

“I’m back in the studio,” Ne-Yo told the crowd while accepting the award. “I got some more songs to write, I got some more music to put out there. I’ma make myself worthy of this.”

Mike WiLL Made-It received Songwriter of the Year for his plethora of hits including “Bandz a Make Her Dance,” “Pour It Up,” “Bugatti,” and “Body Party.” Rae Sremmurd, the duo signed to his label Eardrumma, treated the crowd to a performance of their hit “No Flex Zone.”

Jermaine Dupri was honored with the biggest award of the evening, the ASCAP Founders Award. Bow Wow aka Shad Moss kicked off the tribute with a performance of “I Think They Like Me” before Usher took the stage to honor his mentor with “Confessions.”

“Next time they say this award, they gotta say Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy, and Jermaine Dupri,” said J.D., who joins a prestigious list of past honorees.

Other big winners included Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I., who received the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song award for “Blurred Lines,” while Jay Z and Justin Timberlake were awarded the Top Rap Song of the Year for “Holy Grail.”

Mario Performs ‘Someday at Christmas’ for Rap-Up Sessions

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. With less than a week until Santa comes down the chimney, Mario brightened up our Hollywood studio with a special performance for Rap-Up Sessions.

Accompanied by Trevor Wesley on keyboard, the R&B crooner performed a stripped-down cover of Stevie Wonder’s Motown classic “Someday at Christmas,” which can be found on the soundtrack to The Best Man Holiday.

Mario’s fifth album Evolve is due in early 2014 featuring production from Bam Alexander, Polow Da Don, and Glass John.

Get in the holiday spirit with his seasonal song, and watch him perform “Somebody Else,” “Fatal Distraction,” and his No. 1 hit “Let Me Love You.”

Mario Performs for Rap-Up Sessions

It’s been four years since the release of Mario’s last album D.N.A., but the R&B sensation proved that he hasn’t missed a beat when he stopped by our Hollywood studio. With the lights turned low, the 27-year-old singer delivered an intimate performance exclusively for Rap-Up Sessions.

Accompanied by Trevor Wesley on keyboard, he started out with his biggest hit “Let Me Love You,” which topped the charts for nine consecutive weeks in 2005. With the Sunset Strip in the background, he thrilled with his Nicki Minaj-assisted single “Somebody Else” and capped it off with his R&B ballad “Fatal Distraction.”

His fifth album Evolve is due in early 2014 featuring production from Bam Alexander, Polow Da Don, and Glass John. “With this album, you’re definitely gonna hear a different sound,” Mario told Rap-Up.com. “You’re gonna hear different perspectives, different concepts.”

New Music: Mario – ‘Fatal Distraction’

Fatal Distraction

Hot on the heels of the Nicki Minaj-assisted “Somebody Else,” Mario switches lanes on his second single “Fatal Distraction.” The R&B crooner is attracted to his best friend’s girlfriend, but worries about the consequences. He cries out in a falsetto over the haunting piano ballad.

“It just talks about the distractions and temptations and the infatuation that can have on a man when it comes to a woman,” Mario told TheDrop.fm.

His fifth album Evolve is set for release in October.

“The album is alternative R&B, alternative in the sense of fusing different sounds than I have in the past,” he told Music Choice. “You’re gonna dance, you might cry, you’re gonna wanna make love, and some songs will make you think about life as well.”
