The sequins, stilettos, and sparkle were out in full force for “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Music’s most powerful voices joined together to pay homage to the great cities of soul music including Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis, and Philadelphia at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Sunday night (Dec. 18).

The all-star lineup included Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Florence + The Machine, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J, and Jill Scott, accompanied by The Roots, with ?uestlove and Adam Blackstone serving as musical directors. 50 Cent, Common, and Queen Latifah were among the presenters.

The big-voiced trio of Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, and Kelly Clarkson kicked things off with a medley of “You Keep Me Hanging On,” “Spotlight,” “Real Love,” and “Since U Been Gone.” Mavis Staples, Erykah Badu, and Chaka Khan brought the house down with “I’ll Take You There” and Khan and Blige dueted on “Ain’t Nobody.”

Following an introduction from Nas, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Wanda Jackson paid tribute to the late Amy Winehouse with “You Know I’m No Good.”

“She was the most incredible artist,” said Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine, who performed Winehouse’s “Back to Black” during the taping. “I feel kind of overwhelmed.”

“VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul” airs tonight at 9 p.m. on VH1.

Mary J. Blige shows off her acting chops in the musical Rock of Ages. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul plays gentlemen’s club owner Justice, covering ’80s hits by Pat Benatar and Journey. The star-studded cast includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, and Alec Baldwin. The film, directed by Adam Shankman, hits theaters next summer. Blige was the calm before the storm on “The X Factor.” While tears were shed on last night’s elimination episode, the R&B songstress soothed with an acoustic performance of her My Life II cut “Need Someone.” After leaving the stage, Mary tweeted her support to booted contestant Rachel Crow. “Keep your head up!!!!!!!!” she told the 13-year-old singer.

Rico Love turned the lights all the way on at his star-studded 29th birthday bash hosted by Usher, Mary J. Blige, and Diddy during Art Basel week in Miami on Friday night (Dec. 2). The Grammy-winning songwriter/producer, who’s written hits for Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Diddy-Dirty Money, partied with his friends including Timbaland, Cee Lo Green, Yelawolf, Maino, Irv Gotti, and his Division1 signees Cherlise and Teairra Mari, who celebrated her 24th birthday. Guests dined on Italian fare at the invite-only dinner at Vic & Angelo’s before heading to the after-party at Club Play.

Rico was presented with the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “There Goes My Baby” by his close friend and mentor Usher, while “4 AM” singer Melanie Fiona serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” before he blew out the candles on his five-tier music-themed cake.

“I had such an amazing time! I had Diddy, Usher, and Mary hosting, my closest friends celebrating with me—this was so epic,” said Rico, who was named SESAC’s Songwriter of the Year. “2011 was such an incredible year for me and I look forward to another year of #1 hits.”

After performing her classic album My Life in its entirety and showcasing some of her latest material off the sequel at the Tabernacle, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul kicked back with Monica, Young Jeezy, DeVyne Stephens, and husband/manager Kendu Isaacs at an after-party hosted by Hennessy at Luckie Food Lounge. Mary was all smiles as she laughed it up in VIP, while Jeezy could be seen enjoying himself with a drink in hand.
