New Music: Mary J. Blige – ‘Whole Damn Year’ + ‘Therapy’

Whole Damn Year

Love hurts. Mary J. Blige bares her heart and soul on “Whole Damn Year,” the new single from her upcoming album The London Sessions. On the minimalistic piano-driven track, a fragile Mary shares her pain as she reflects on a bad breakup that left her emotionally scarred.

“It took a whole damn year to repair my body / It’s been a bad five years / Gone take a long, long year for me to trust somebody,” sings MJB.

The R&B veteran spent the summer in the studio with U.K. hitmakers including Sam Smith, Disclosure, Eg White, Emile Sandé, Jimmy Napes, Naughty Boy, and SAM ROMANS.

The album, her first since 2011’s My Life II…The Journey Continues (Act I), will be released December 2 on Capitol Records.

“Hi Mary,” said a nervous K. “I’m K. Michelle and I really love you. I really, really, really love you, and I thank you.”

“You made me want to be a singer. I thank you for everything. You are absolutely amazing,” she said with tears in her eyes.

The ladies gave each other a big hug and Mary told her, “You have an amazing voice.”

K continued praising her. “I one day hope to have half the career that you have,” she said. “You have touched so many people and to stand here with you today, that is unreal, and I just want to say thank you…and I’ma keep stalking you.”

New Music: Mary J. Blige – ‘Right Now’

Mary J. Blige

After collaborating with Disclosure and Sam Smith earlier this year, Mary J. Blige packed her bags and booked a ticket to London, where she’s been recording her new album Mary J. Blige: The London Sessions.

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has been in the studio with executive producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and British hitmakers including Smith, Emeli Sandé, and Naughty Boy.

She introduces her new sound with the first offering “Right Now,” a synth-heavy track written and produced by Disclosure, Smith, and Jimmy Napes.

“Our idea was to become part of London, to really embrace the culture, to really live in it,” Mary told The Guardian. “The music is free over here the way it used to be in the States. Artists are just free to do what they love. Listening to the radio you can hear the freedom. The music is living and breathing—you can hear that from Adele’s last album.”

The London Sessions is due December 2 on Capitol Records.
