Behind the Video: Nelly Furtado – ‘Parking Lot’

Nelly Furtado

Nelly Furtado gets behind the wheel in the video for “Parking Lot.” Directed by Ray Kay, the street chic clip features a parking lot full of colorful custom Mini Coopers including ones covered in fur, newspapers, animal print, and even Christmas lights. The Canadian singer dances on top of the cars and performs some choreographed moves with her dancers against a chain-link fence.

“This video has some special effects,” said Nelly on the L.A. set. “We’re gonna have some really interesting cute creations with headlights. It’s gonna be kinda surreal.”

The video will premiere Monday, while Nelly’s album The Spirit Indestructible drops Tuesday.

Nelly Furtado ‘Stoked’ to Meet Tyler, the Creator

Tyler, the Creator, Sway, and Nelly Furtado

There are not many people who can make Nelly Furtado shy. But the Canadian songstress was starstruck upon meeting Tyler, the Creator. During a visit to MTV, she was introduced to the Odd Future frontman.

“@fucktyler The best moment of yesterday was meeting you after shyly hiding from you behind the flower vase #stoked,” tweeted Nelly, whose single “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)” was inspired by the L.A. collective.

“The state of mind I was in, I was actually listening to a lot of different music a few weeks before,” she told MTV News. “I think I was listening to Odd Future or something, and I was inspired by how dark it sounded and how heavy and visceral and how it made your blood feel things. And I just thought, ‘Wow—that’s really missing in music. We’re missing that rawness, that energy and that power.’”

Nelly’s album The Spirit Indestructible is due September 18. Watch her debut the Rodney Jerkins-produced “Parking Lot” during her acoustic show in L.A.

Video: Nelly Furtado – ‘Spirit Indestructible’

Nelly Furtado

Nelly Furtado is one with nature in the breathtaking video for “Spirit Indestructible,” the second single off her upcoming album of the same name, due September 18. The Canadian songstress performs the empowering anthem against the beautiful backdrop of the beach and snow-covered peaks of Grouse Mountain in Vancouver.

“This song means a lot of things to me ’cause it does have a spirituality to it and a positivity,” explained Nelly. “It’s meant to be empowering, it’s mean to be a tribute to all of us. We all have indestructible spirits.”

The video marks a return to roots for Nelly, whose first video for “I’m Like a Bird” was also shot outdoors. “It’s got an elemental theme. I love nature,” she said. “I do see this new album as sort of a coming home into the original reason why I make music in the first place, which is to have fun and rejoice.”
