R. Kelly Performs with Phoenix at Coachella

Thomas Mars and R. Kelly

You never know who’s going to surprise at Coachella. R. Kelly turned plenty of heads when he appeared during Phoenix’s headlining set on Saturday.

Following a full day of performances from 2 Chainz, Pusha T, and Action Bronson, the R&B icon brought more heat to the desert. He joined the French band on the main stage for a mash-up of his hit “Ignition” and their single “1901.”

“Can get a toot toot, can I get a beep beep?” Kellz asked the sea of festivalgoers, who sang along.

He kept it going with a mix of “I’m a Flirt” and “Chloroform” off Phoenix’s upcoming album, Bankrupt!

Katy Perry tweeted about the surreal moment. “Production value has really gone up at Coochella, it felt like R Kelly was really there! #rkellyhologram,” joked the pop star.

Kellz will also play the Pitchfork Festival and Bonnaroo this summer. Watch footage from his surprise set below.

R. Kelly Chills With Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber and R. Kelly

Are R. Kelly and Justin Bieber working on a collaboration? It’s unclear, but we do know that the two recently met up. The Biebs played the Pied Piper some music, possibly off his upcoming acoustic album.

“Just chillen this weekend with the homie @justinbieber,” tweeted Kellz along with a photo of them hanging out.

Due January 29, Believe Acoustic features acoustic versions of eight songs from the teen superstar’s chart-topping album Believe and previously unreleased songs including “Yellow Raincoat,” “Nothing Like Us,” and “I Would,” produced by Da Internz and Aaron Michael Cox.

On Tuesday, Bieber edged out Lady Gaga to become the most-followed person on Twitter with over 33,348,000 followers.

Meanwhile, R. Kelly has been in the studio working on his new album Black Panties. “I decided to go back and do an old-school R. Kelly album like 12 Play,” he said of his iconic 1993 album. “That’s pretty much what it’s going to be, focusing on more of the bedroom ballads. I like to give people variety and I just gave them two years of romance albums and soul.”
