Rap-Up TV: R. Kelly Talks Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, & Bruno Mars

Twenty years since making his debut, R. Kelly remains one of the most influential and consistent hitmakers in the game. Before his 12th solo album Black Panties drops tomorrow, the R&B genius sat down with Rap-Up TV for an exclusive interview. In Part 1, he discusses his recent collaborations with pop superstars Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars, and his latest work.

Black Panties is mixed with 12 Play, TP-2.com, and a bit of the Born Into the 90′s album,” he said of the project, which features everyone from 2 Chainz to Kelly Rowland. “It’s got all those elements in there, but of today.”

He collaborated with Justin Bieber on his #MusicMondays single “PYD.” The two met up a year ago after discovering they were staying in the same hotel.

“I was lovin’ his music, he was lovin’ mine, so we said, ‘Man, we got to do something together,’” said Kellz. “He finally sent me a track and it was ‘PYD,’ and I put my verse on it and the rest is just history.”

He was so pleased with the results that he’s enlisted the teen idol for his next album. “He’s gonna be doing something on my next up-and-coming album,” revealed Kellz.

Last month, the Chicago native shared the stage with another pop powerhouse, Lady Gaga, at the American Music Awards. “I feel like I met my match when I met Gaga,” he said. “She got a lot of balls. She got a lot of nerve. She’s not afraid to express her music through her vision.”

The two shot a video for their collaboration “Do What U Want,” which Kellz describes as “retarded,” adding, “If you put the two together, you got bi-polar maybe or something like that. … It’s gonna be off the chain.”

If that wasn’t enough, he also guests on the remix to Bruno Mars’ “Gorilla,” which he admits was a challenge at first.

Additionally, he hinted that Bruno may be featured on an upcoming remix of his. “I’ve been talking about, once the album gets going, gettin’ some of these guys that called me. I’ma call them up and say, ‘Hey man, you owe me a favor, dawg.’”

Behind the Video: R. Kelly – ‘Cookie’

R. Kelly

R. Kelly satisfied his sweet tooth while shooting the racy video for his sexual single “Cookie,” the first visuals off his album Black Panties, due Tuesday. The self-proclaimed Cookie Monster brought the ‘hood to a mansion and filled it with scantily-clad ladies, who worked the pole in their black panties and posed as sexy French maids.

“I’m bringing the milk,” said Kellz as women paraded around in lingerie. “I got all kinds of cookies up in here. They’re round, they’re square, triangle, some of them are heart shaped.”

He poured milk into a bath while singing about “licking the middle like an Oreo,” and even gave his co-stars some acting tips.

Watch Kellz take a dip into the cookie jar.

R. Kelly Performs Tribute to Nelson Mandela on ‘Arsenio’

R. Kelly

Just hours after Nelson Mandela’s passing, R. Kelly paid homage to the late civil rights icon during his appearance on “Arsenio.” The R&B legend performed “Solider’s Heart,” a piano ballad which he wrote and performed for the South African leader in his living room in 2010.

“I’m just blessed to know that I walked in his presence,” said Kellz. “He was a spirit walking and being around him inspired me to even go further in my life, in my walk, and my career. He’s just an incredible power.”

In addition to his tribute, he reenacted a press conference while performing his Black Panties cut “Shut Up” and closed out the show with a stirring rendition of “When A Woman Loves.”

During the interview, he shared his preference for panties or thongs (“If you wear thongs, you might as well have your ass just out”), broke down his lyrics about Oreos and black holes, and revealed which artists he’s listening to.

Plus, he improvised by serenading two ladies using the words Frosted Flakes, relish, and ketchup.

R. Kelly and 2 Chainz Perform on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

R. Kelly

R. Kelly turned up the heat in Hollywood during his performance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The R&B icon hit the outdoor stage to perform a medley of his Black Panties singles. While sitting on a stool, a masked Kellz recreated his album cover by playing the violin on one of his dancers and singing his slow jam “Genius.” He then segued into his anthem “My Story,” bringing out 2 Chainz to perform his verse.

He also sat down for an interview, where he discussed his fear of flying, writing his song “Remote Control,” and album title.

“It was an inspiration I had while doing a show,” said Kellz of Black Panties. “I was singing a song called ‘It Seems Like You’re Ready’ and panties started flying out of everywhere. It was like my Teddy Pendergrass moment. But then this one particular pair, I think it was a medium, came just from the right of me and it landed on my microphone, and I looked at that like that was a sign.”

He said that a Black Panties book is also in the works as well as a TV version of “Trapped in the Closet” and a Broadway play.

Kellz, who used to sing on the street, also performed his ode to McDonald’s. “McDonald’s is the place for you, when your day is through, you can go to McDonald’s and get yourself a Big Mac,” he sang.

Watch his serenade to fast food and more below.

New Music: R. Kelly f/ Kelly Rowland – ‘All the Way’

R. Kelly and Kelly Rowland

R. Kelly and Kelly Rowland are going “All the Way.” The R&B icon and Destiny’s Child diva close the curtains and keep the bed rocking until the early morning on their steamy slow jam off Black Panties.

“There ain’t no such thing as a half with sex, so baby boy, we might as well go all the way,” coos Kelly in a falsetto, while Kellz responds, “You don’t know if you’re addicted till you relapse from detox of loving each other.”

Due December 10, the album also features collaborations with Ludacris, 2 Chainz, Migos, Juicy J, and Future.

Black Panties is something that’s gonna be like the 12 Play,” said Kellz. “If anybody out there knows about 12 Play, you know about Black Panties ’cause it’s basically 12 Play upgraded, like a phone that’s got new apps on it. I’ve remixed my whole career.”

Take it to the bedroom with Kellz and Kelly.
