Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, & L.A. Reid Discuss Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’

Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins

Earlier today, Michael Jackson fans got to hear a new song from the pop icon called “Love Never Felt So Good.” The disco-soul jam, which features Justin Timberlake, will appear on his posthumous album Xscape.

Some of the producers including Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, and Stargate sat down with Billboard editor Joe Levy to discuss the project, which includes eight unreleased songs originally recorded between 1983 and 1999.

“What drives us is we really want to make a difference and Michael Jackson was the perfect artist who spoke to all of us,” said Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid, who serves as the album’s executive producer. “He tapped us on the shoulder and said, ‘Would you just do me one small favor and remind people that I’m the greatest?’ And we all said yes.”

Timbaland added, “Michael was one of the greatest entertainers. I felt like I had to dig in to a place where it’s deeper than just music.”

Rodney Jerkins, who worked on the title track with MJ, admitted that he was hesitant at first. “I worked with Michael before and I knew what his expectations were, what his standards were,” he said. “Once L.A. played me the music, I was all the way in.”

The behind-the-scenes clip is part of a documentary, which is available on the deluxe edition of Xscape, due May 13.

Timbaland and Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is getting the Timbaland treatment. As part of his “Timbaland Thursdays” series, the super-producer has released a snippet of “Slave to the Rhythm,” his collaboration with the King of Pop. The minute-long track features unreleased vocals from the late legend over one of Timbo’s coveted beats.

“She’s a slave to the rhythm of love,” sings MJ.

A song of the same name leaked in 2010, while just last year, a pop-dance version featuring Justin Bieber surfaced.

In August, Timbaland announced that he had been working with L.A. Reid on a posthumous project from Jackson and that the first single would be a song entitled “Chicago.”

Rap-Up TV: Meek Mill Enlists Rita Ora, Timbaland for Sophomore Album

The Maybach Music crew is gearing up for a big year ahead with new albums from Rick Ross, Wale, and Meek Mill, who plans to drop his sophomore LP this spring. While attending the launch of “REVOLT Live” in Hollywood, the Philly MC revealed that he has recorded over 80 songs and collaborated with the likes of DJ Khaled and Rita Ora, who appears on a song called “I’ma Ride.”

“It’s fire. Just know I’m spittin’ on it,” Meek exclusively told Rap-Up TV. “[Rita's] singin’. She’s sounding very good on it. Hopefully the people love it when it drops.”

Timbaland has also lent his production skills. “That’s the OG,” said Meek. “Me and Timbaland always kickin’ it for the last year or two, so I seen him one day, I was playin’ some music for him and Hov, and he was like, he wanna go in and make some magic. I was all the way with that.”

So what can fans expect from the follow-up to his 2012 debut Dreams and Nightmares? “You can expect just quality music,” explained Meek, who still hasn’t decided on a title. “You know me, I’m a street rapper. I come with that street shit, so I’m just comin’ with that on another level right now and takin’ them to a different place.”

During his recent trip to Miami, he met up in the studio with Justin Bieber. “I seen him the day before he got locked up. We just was chillin’,” said Meek, who shared his support for the Biebs following his arrest.

“He’s a kid. Kids gon’ be kids. Everybody’s not perfect.”
