Rap-Up TV: Tinashe Talks Breakout Year, Sophomore Album

Tinashe has had an incredible year. The “2 On” singer released her debut album Aquarius in October and scored a breakout hit with her ScHoolboy Q-assisted single, but the highlight was traveling the world.

“I went all over Europe. I went to Abu Dhabi. To be able to go that far away from home and have fans, it’s crazy,” she told Rap-Up TV at Cali Christmas. “It’s really humbling.”

Once she wraps the U.S. leg of her “Aquarius Tour,” she will head back into the studio in January to record her sophomore album. “I have songs that are in the works,” she said. “I’m always being creative and thinking about what I’m gonna do next.”

She hopes to reunite with DJ Mustard, Boi-1da, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Stargate, who all produced for Aquarius, and bring in some new producers.

Earlier this month, another DJ Mustard-produced song called “Fuckin Wit Me” leaked. It was recorded for her album, but didn’t make the cut. However, it may see an official release in the future.

Plus, find out how Tinashe plans to spend the holidays and her favorite Christmas song.

New Music: Tinashe – ‘The Leap’

Tinashe

Hot on the heels of her collaborations with Calvin Harris, Nick Jonas, and Kid Ink, Tinashe lends her voice to “The Leap” for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack. The dark and sensual song features the “2 On” singer’s smokey vocals over a stripped-down beat.

“Lookin’ for a sign, karma’s coming back for us / I was waiting on you, waiting on you,” she coos.

Curated by Lorde, the soundtrack is due November 17 featuring Ariana Grande, Miguel, Pusha T, and Grace Jones.

Starting December 5, Tinashe will hit the road on her “Aquarius Tour,” playing shows in L.A., Toronto, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Nick Jonas and Tinashe Perform ‘Jealous (Remix)’ on ‘106 & Park’

Nick Jonas and Tinashe

The livest audience got even liver when Nick Jonas made his debut appearance on “106 & Park” on Wednesday. The former boy bander kicked off the show by performing the remix to his steamy single “Jealous” with special guest Tinashe.

The pop heartthrob and “2 On” singer also sat down with Ray J and Keshia Chanté‎ to discuss how their collaboration came together. “It’s an amazing song to begin with, so obviously it was one that I wanted to be a part of, so he just reached out to see if I was down to be on the remix and I was like, ‘Absolutely,’” said Tinashe.

“It kinda breathed new life into the song,” added Nick. “The minute I heard she was gonna do it, I was in the car and ’2 On’ came on.”

His self-titled album, which arrives November 10, explores a more R&B sound, and was influenced by everyone from Prince and Stevie Wonder to Frank Ocean and The Weeknd.

“It was a really important thing for me to step into my soul and R&B influences on this record,” he said. “When I was working with my brothers, I didn’t really get to do that as much, but I had the freedom to just go in and create and experiment.”

Watch Nick and Tinashe perform their duet for the first time on “106 & Park.”
