BET Hip-Hop Awards 2014 Cyphers

Taylor Gang Cypher

The BET Hip-Hop Awards 2014 aired last night, and the highlight was once again the cyphers. Established and up-and-coming MCs all stepped to the mic hoping to earn a spot alongside Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Eminem, and Royce Da 5’9″ in the cypher hall of fame.

Taylor Gang’s Tuki Carter, Berner, Chevy Woods, Ty Dolla $ign, Juicy J, and Wiz Khalifa joined forces and repped for their clique.

Lil Mama, Detroit Che, and Snow Tha Product held it down for the ladies, while Troy Ave, Vic Mensa, Kevin Gates, and Jarren Benton proved why they earned a spot on XXL‘s Freshman Class list.

Hip-hop couple Remy Ma and Papoose celebrated black love with their cypher, name checking other famous couples including Beyoncé and Jay Z and Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

With DJ Premier on the turntables, Arsonal, Couture, Calicoe, and Murda Mook all participated in a live cypher, but it was Mook who stole the show at the expense of Drake.

Common and Jay Electronica Pay Tribute to Mike Brown at BET Hip-Hop Awards

Vince Staples, Jay Electronica, Mike Brown's parents, and Common

The most powerful moment of the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2014 came courtesy of Common. The Chicago lyricist was joined by Jay Electronica, Vince Staples, and a choir while performing the remix to his Nobody’s Smiling single “Kingdom.”

“We do this for the people, black people all around this country that go through the struggle,” said Common. “We do this for our lost soldiers, our fallen soldiers.”

At the end of the performance, he brought out the parents of Mike Brown. The crowd put their hands in the air and there was a moment of silence in remembrance of the unarmed black teen who was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson.

Common’s peers praised his stirring set on social media. “Powerful moment on BET just now,” tweeted Trey Songz, while Estelle added, “Shouts to @common for powerful moment @ the bet hiphop awards. #MikeBrownlaw.”

Jay Electronica will join Common on his “Nobody’s Smiling” tour, which kicks off November 21 in Las Vegas.
