Justin Timberlake, Rihanna Among Winners at 2013 American Music Awards

Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake earned the top honors at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday.

The “Mirrors” singer took home three awards at Sunday’s show at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, while Swift lead the pack with four awards including Artist of the Year.

Timberlake, who performed “Drink You Away” during the telecast, won in the categories of Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album.

Rihanna scored two awards including Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist and the first-ever Icon Award, which was presented to her by Jay Z and her mother Monica Fenty.

“Right now, I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an Icon Award,” said Rihanna, who performed “Diamonds.” “That is weird to even say out loud.”

Two-time winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat out Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar in the Rap/Hip-Hop categories.

Miley Cyrus Performs with Kitten at AMAs

Miley Cyrus came in like a “Wrecking Ball” and purred her way out of the Nokia Theatre at Sunday’s American Music Awards. The singer, who turned 21 on Saturday, performed her No. 1 hit as an animated kitten appeared on screen behind her, mouthing along to the lyrics. As she neared the end of the performance, the cat started to cry and even stuck its tongue out.

TLC and Lil Mama Perform ‘Waterfalls’ at AMAs

Twenty years after making their American Music Awards debut, TLC returned to the AMA stage on Sunday. Dressed in all white, T-Boz and Chilli performed their classic “Waterfalls” with special guest Lil Mama.

The 24-year-old rapper, who played Left Eye in the VH1 biopic CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, rapped and danced along to Left Eye’s verse. As the crowd rose to its feet, a photo of the late Left Eye appeared on screen.

Lady Gaga and R. Kelly Perform ‘Do What U Want’ at AMAs

With ARTPOP at No. 1 on the charts, pop’s reigning queen Lady Gaga put on a presidential performance with R. Kelly at Sunday’s American Music Awards. Following their racy appearance on “SNL,” the duo mixed business with pleasure while performing their hit “Do What U Want.”

Kellz played the president while Gaga was his secretary in the dramatic presentation, inspired by “Scandal” and Kellz’ own “Trapped in the Closet” series.

They made love on top of the desk and Kellz pulled out his phone at one point, asking, “Who put these pictures on Instagram?”

He gushed about Gaga on the red carpet. “Lady Gaga is one of the coolest girls I’ve ever met in my life,” Kellz told E! “She’s real, she’s very talented, she writes her own music, and when we met it was like I met my match.”

Jennifer Lopez Pays Tribute to Celia Cruz at AMAs

Jennifer Lopez added some sizzle to the 2013 American Music Awards. The Latina bombshell paid tribute to salsa queen Celia Cruz at Sunday’s show, shaking her hips and running through multiple wardrobe changes.

“I felt very honored and a little scared, I don’t think there is anything better for this year’s AMA,” Lopez told the Associated Press. “Her music was full of work and energy, it fills your soul and in your bones when you listen to it, you can’t help but dance, I feel like she made the world dance.”

Kendrick Lamar Performs at AMAs

From Compton to the AMAs. Kendrick Lamar capped off a tremendous 2013 by performing at Sunday’s American Music Awards from the Nokia Theatre in his hometown of L.A.

GQ’s “Man of the Year” delivered two of the biggest hits off his debut good kid, m.A.A.d city, “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and “Poetic Justice,” with some help from TDE songstress SZA. He had the crowd on its feet and even had Taylor Swift grooving along.

Rihanna Receives Icon Award, Performs ‘Diamonds’ at AMAs

180 million singles and 50 million albums later, Rihanna received the first-ever Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday. Following an introduction from Bill Maher, the 25-year-old pop star performed one of her 12 No. 1 singles, “Diamonds,” while wearing her hair in a doobie wrap.

Jay Z appeared via a videotaped message to congratulate his protégé. “Between me and you, can you believe this shit? Unbelievable,” he said.

RiRi’s mother Monica Fenty then presented her daughter with the award. “I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused,” she said.

During the acceptance speech, Rihanna thanked L.A. Reid, her family, her glam team, and her fans. “Right now, I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an Icon Award,” she said. “That is weird to even say out loud.”

She also won the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist.
