Rihanna Receives Icon Award, Performs ‘Diamonds’ at AMAs

180 million singles and 50 million albums later, Rihanna received the first-ever Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday. Following an introduction from Bill Maher, the 25-year-old pop star performed one of her 12 No. 1 singles, “Diamonds,” while wearing her hair in a doobie wrap.

Jay Z appeared via a videotaped message to congratulate his protégé. “Between me and you, can you believe this shit? Unbelievable,” he said.

RiRi’s mother Monica Fenty then presented her daughter with the award. “I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused,” she said.

During the acceptance speech, Rihanna thanked L.A. Reid, her family, her glam team, and her fans. “Right now, I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an Icon Award,” she said. “That is weird to even say out loud.”

She also won the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform ‘Can’t Hold Us’ at AMAs

From independent hustlers to AMA winners, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis showed that anything is possible with their performance at the American Music Awards. The Seattle duo, who led the nominations for this year’s show, performed “Can’t Hold Us” live from the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami on “The Heist” tour.

They also won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, beating out Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z.

During his acceptance speech, Macklemore acknowledged Trayvon Martin and victims of racial profiling. “It’s time we fight against racism,” he said.

Nelly and Florida Georgia Line Perform at AMAs

Florida Georgia Line and Nelly revved up their engines and rolled into Sunday’s American Music Awards. The country duo teamed up with the St. Louis rapper to perform the remix to their single “Cruise.” Nelly also took it back to 2001 with his hit “Ride Wit Me,” and joined his collaborators onstage to accept the award for Single of the Year.

Justin Timberlake Performs ‘Drink You Away’ at AMAs

After winning the first award of the evening for Favorite Pop/Rock Male, Justin Timberlake performed “Drink You Away” for the first time on television at Sunday’s American Music Awards. Looking sharp in a black suit, JT strummed a guitar while singing with his band, JT & the Tennessee Kids.

“We’re JT and the Tennessee Kids and this is a song about alcohol,” said Justin while introducing his 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 single.

He later picked up the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist and shouted out Rihanna’s mother. “Can we talk about how cute Rihanna’s mom is?” he said.

Pitbull and Ke$ha Perform ‘Timber’ at AMAs

Ke$ha and Pitbull

In addition to hosting the American Music Awards, Pitbull spiced up the stage with his scorching performance. The Miami rapper teamed up with Ke$ha and an army of scantily-clad dancers for their top 10 hit “Timber,” for which the video will debut later tonight.

His album Global Warming: Meltdown arrives tomorrow featuring collaborations with Kelly Rowland, Mayer Hawthorne, and Mohombi.

Ariana Grande Performs ‘Tattooed Heart’ at AMAs

Ariana Grande kicked off the 2013 American Music Awards on a high note. Dressed in a shimmering red gown, the pint-sized diva showed off her powerful pipes while performing a Motown-inspired rendition of her song “Tattooed Heart” off her debut Yours Truly.

She breathed a sigh of relief when it was done. “That was the most nerve wracking thing ever and I haven’t had access to my phone all day but hi y’allllll love u I’m so nervous!” tweeted Ariana, who later scored the award for New Artist of the Year.

She received rave reviews from Naya Rivera and Aubrey O’Day.

“Ariana Grande is on stage killing all the gimmicks,” tweeted the Danity Kane singer.

On Tuesday, Ariana will release her second Christmas single “Love Is Everything.” She previewed it for her fans on Instagram.

2013 American Music Awards: Red Carpet

From horses to haute couture, there were plenty of wild and fashionable moments at the 2013 American Music Awards. Before the big show, the biggest names in music strut down the red carpet at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Gaga, who is the new face of Versace, channeled Bianca Jagger as she arrived on a white horse before heading inside to perform “Do What U Want” with R. Kelly, who sported a leather skirt and smoked a cigar.

Miley Cyrus kept it classy in a white pant suit and Lil Mama rocked green hair. 2 Chainz turned up in a colorful Versace shirt, Jennifer Hudson was glowing in an orange Dior number, and Danity Kane made their reunion red-hot.
