Hip-hop’s freshmen and veterans took turns on the mic during the cyphers for the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2011. From up-and-comers Kendrick Lamar and Machine Gun Kelly to the Maybach Music Group and Shady 2.0 crews to singers-rappers Chris Brown and Estelle, the talent impressed with their wicked wordplay. T.I.’s homecoming tour continued at the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta on Saturday (Oct. 1). Young Jeezy ignited the stage with a fiery performance of his new single “F.A.M.E.,” bringing out his fellow ATLien, who also performed his just-released track “I’m Flexin’” during the opening number. The sixth annual event, which was taped at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center to air at a later date, featured performances from 2011’s breakout stars and some familiar faces from the past.

The embattled DMX staged a comeback with “Get at Me Dog,” “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” with his fellow Ruff Ryder Swizz Beatz. Lupe Fiasco was joined by Erykah Badu for the politically charged “Words I Never Said.” Big Sean and Roscoe Dash poured out a little “Marvin & Chardonnay” and El DeBarge smoothed it out with Wale and Rick Ross on “That Way.” Nine-time nominee Wiz Khalifa repped for his team with “Taylor Gang” and Heavy D closed out the show, taking it back with some help from Tyrese. LL Cool J was presented with the “I Am Hip-Hop Icon” Award by Nelly.

Despite his record-breaking 18 nominations, Lil Wayne and his Young Money crew were absent.

Lil Wayne continues his winning streak. After selling nearly a million copies of Tha Carter IV, the hip-hop heavyweight has been nominated a record-breaking 18 times at the BET Hip-Hop Awards ’11.

Weezy scores his nominations in the coveted categories of Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, and Video of the Year for “I’m on One” and “Look at Me Now,” which he shares with Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes.

Trailing behind Weezy are Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa, who tied with nine nods each including MVP of the Year. Rick Ross follows with eight and Chris Brown nabs six. Nicki Minaj is the only female rapper nominated this year in categories including Lyricist of the Year and CD of the Year for her breakthrough debut Pink Friday.

Actor and comedian Mike Epps will host the sixth annual show, which will be taped at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta on October 1 and air October 11 at 8 p.m.

A victorious Nicki Minaj couldn’t contain her excitement after winning three trophies at Saturday’s BET Hip Hop Awards, including Rookie of the Year, Made-You-Look Award, and People’s Champ Award. “One word for Hip Hop Awards. EPIC. Thank u BET. Love ya barbz/kenz!” tweeted the blonde bombshell after her big night.

Multiple winner Rick Ross opened the show at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center by performing “B.M.F.” and “MC Hammer” with Diddy, later bringing out Hammer himself for “Too Legit to Quit.” Gucci Mane and Swizz Beatz fired up the stage with “Gucci Time,” “Dilemma” collaborators Kelly Rowland and Nelly presented Nicki with an award, Waka Flocka Flame walked off the stage (and later got into a Twitter argument with BET executive Stephen Hill), and Dipset reunited.

An absent Jay-Z took home CD of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Video, Eminem scored Lyricist of the Year, and Drake scooped up MVP of the Year, while Salt-N-Pepa were honored for their contributions to hip-hop.

Keri Hilson turned up her “Pretty Girl” swag with blonde curls, teashades, and a leopard bra with nails to match at the Belvedere Intense Zone 4/Interscope Records party kicking off BET Hip Hop Awards weekend. Young Money’s Shanell, Flo Rida, Terrence, and Rocsi popped bottles rooftop at Ventanas lounge in downtown Atlanta on Friday (Oct. 1), while Zone 4′s newest signee Lloyd performed his sexy single “Lay It Down” before the crowd of tastemakers.

This year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards proved drama free. Instead of being marred by controversy as in past years, music took the spotlight at Saturday’s fourth annual show in Atlanta.

Highlights included performances from Young Jeezy with special guest Jay-Z (“Real As It Gets”), Snoop Dogg and The-Dream (“Gangsta Luv”), Wale and Gucci Mane (“Pretty Girls”), Mario, Sean Garrett, and Gucci Mane (“Break Up”), Soulja Boy, OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci, and Shawty Lo (“Gucci Bandana”), Fabolous and The-Dream (“Throw It in the Bag”), and a reunited Goodie Mob, who closed the show with “Cell Therapy” and “Get Rich to This.”

T.I.’s absence was felt as Tiny accepted two awards on his behalf, including Album of the Year for Paper Trail. “Although I’m not there with you all, I’m there in spirit,” Tip’s other half read. “My road to redemption is almost over. … Thanks for the support.”

Jay-Z took home the MVP of the Year trophy, while Drake picked up Rookie of the Year honors. The late DJ AM won for DJ of the Year and Busta Rhymes accepted on his behalf. Young Jeezy and Chuck D presented Ice Cube with the I Am Hip-Hop icon award.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009 will air on Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m.
