Some familiar faces hit the stage at the “2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors.” Hip-hop newcomers and veterans paid respect to those that shaped the Dirty South with performances by Jermaine Dupri and Diddy, Bun B, Mystikal, Asher Roth, and many more. • Drake, in a “Free Wayne” T-shirt, and Bun B performing “Get Throwed” in tribute to J Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records.
• Jermaine Dupri going back in time with Bow Wow on the Kriss Kross classic “Jump,” and bringing Diddy and Lil Jon to the stage for “Welcome to Atlanta.”
• Missy Elliott reemerging to honor Timbaland with “Get Your Freak On” and “Work It,” plus Bun B rapping “Big Pimpin’,” Fabolous doing “Make Me Better,” and Keri Hilson collaborating with D.O.E. and Sebastian on “The Way I Are.”

The Big Apple got a taste of the Dirty South as VH1 celebrated the genre’s Southern region at the “2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors” taped at Hammerstein Ballroom on Thursday (June 3). Artists including Keri Hilson, Drake, T.I., Rick Ross, Diddy, Brandy, Nelly, Kid Rock, and Kelly Rowland helped honor Jermaine Dupri, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew, Master P, and others with musical tributes at the seventh annual event.

Def Jam was in the building as VH1 saluted the legendary hip-hop label at VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009. The show featured performances from Eminem, Foxy Brown, DMX, Method Man, Redman, Ja Rule, Ashanti, and many more.

Hip-hop royalty was under one roof as VH1 commemorated the 25th anniversary of Def Jam at VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009 on Wednesday (Sept. 23). Old school met new school at the 6th annual celebration in Brooklyn. Among the highlights…

• The Roots, Eminem, and DJ Jazzy Jeff opened with LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells.”
• Ja Rule and Ashanti reunited on stage to perform “Down for You” and “Always on Time.”
• DMX collaborated with Gym Class Heroes on his 1999 hit “Party Up.”
• Ludacris and Scarface represented for the South with “Guess Who’s Back” and “Southern Hospitality.”
• Mary J. Blige and Method Man reminisced over “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By.”
• Dressed as LL Cool J, Rick Ross took the stage to perform “Hustlin’.”
• Trey Songz filled in for Nate Dogg by performing “Regulate” with Warren G.
• Gym Class Heroes, Wale, and KRS-One covered the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”
• Foxy Brown and Fabolous closed the show as part of an all-star medley.

Hip-hop and R&B stars, past and present, bridged the gap to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Def Jam at VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York on Wednesday (Sept. 23).

Foxy Brown and DMX reemerged from hiding to join Eminem, Ludacris, Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Eve, Ashanti, Method Man, Fabolous, Trey Songz, Kid Rock, and more in paying homage to the legendary hip-hop label.

What defines a hip-hop legend? Talent, longevity, and demanded respect. The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City was packed with VIPs who came out to celebrate their legends this year, at the taping of “VH1 Hip Hop Honors.” Among the honorees this year were Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, A Tribe Called Quest, New Jack Swing, Whodini, and even Wild Style (celebrating hip-hop art and breakdancing).

Tracy Morgan hosted the show, decked out in a thick gold dookie chain and armed with celebratory jokes for the honorees. Celebrity guests such as the gorgeous Kerry Washington presented awards and hip-hop heavy-hitters dropped in to show their appreciation for the exalted music pioneers all evening.

This year, the awards ceremony proves that hip-hop is more than just a genre of music. It’s fashion, it’s art, and it’s an entire culture by itself. Fans, industry executives, and fellow hip-hop artists paid homage to the guests of honor for their contribution to this constantly growing culture. Artists such as Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, and Eve—just to name a few—performed a medley of Missy Elliott’s most famous tracks, adopting it as their own and putting a unique twist on the style of each song.

Grateful, yet proud of their accomplishments, each honoree said a few words to their fans and to the press about their journey through the music industry. Teddy Riley himself even performed to bring the masses back to a time and place where hip-hop and R&B were just beginning to find global success.

Throughout the show, fresh new artists who owe their inspiration to their successors graced the stage with musical performances that had people reminiscing about the origins of the music that changed the face of pop culture.

“VH1 Hip Hop Honors” airs tonight at 10 p.m. on VH1.

The Black Girls Rock! Awards were held yesterday at The Allen Room, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. This event was part of VH1 Hip-Hop Honors weekend in NYC. The show recognizes exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers and communities. Missy Elliott was among the honorees. Cassie, Tweet, MC Lyte, and Chrisette Michele were in attendance.
