Rap-Up TV: Teyana Taylor Talks ‘VII,’ Kanye West, & Chris Brown

Teyana Taylor will silence her critics when she releases her debut album VII on November 4. The project has been years in the making for the Harlem singer, who parted ways with Pharrell’s Star Trak/Interscope Records and signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music in 2012.

And no one could be more excited than Teyana herself. Rap-Up TV caught up with G.O.O.D. Music’s First Lady backstage at August Alsina’s “Testimony Live” tour in L.A. to discuss the long-awaited release.

“It’s kinda hard because people don’t really know the politics behind the industry,” said Teyana. “Everybody is being impatient and so am I. I’m like, ‘I need answers now.’ I finally got an album. I’m just as excited as everybody else and I just hope everybody likes it.”

She has enlisted production from Bangladesh, Harmony, Boi-1da, Hit-Boy, and The Order, with appearances from Pusha T, Yo Gotti, Fabolous, and her friend Chris Brown, who appears on “Do Not Disturb.”

“It’s one of those slow animated songs,” she said of the Breezy duet, which she has been performing on tour.

Unlike her past situation, Kanye West has given her the freedom to do what she wants. “He definitely gives you that creative control. He kinda lets you do you and then you take your project to him,” said Teyana. “You have it all laid out and then he puts the icing and the candles and blows ‘em out and everything else.”

But she won’t hand in the album to Kanye until it’s perfect. “I’m a perfectionist just like him. He always says I’m a female version of him.”

In keeping with the title, VII will be packaged with seven visuals, which she plans to tease in the weeks ahead.

Video: August Alsina f/ Nicki Minaj – ‘No Love (Remix)’

August Alsina and Nicki Minaj

Love takes over in the cinematic video for August Alsina’s “No Love (Remix)” co-starring Nicki Minaj. In the Benny Boom-directed clip, August and Nicki play lovers, but their relationship is non-exclusive. He hits the club with another woman, while Nicki waits at home.

But soon he realizes that what he has with Nicki is the real deal. He sends her hundreds of roses to show his love and win her heart.

In a recent interview with Rap-Up TV, August opened up about shooting the video with the “Anaconda” rapper, who also wrote the treatment.

“Nicki was very, very deeply involved with this one in particular, as far as the video goes,” he said. “She had a vision for it and she really, really is a big fan of the record, which was real important to me because it makes it that much more special.”

“No Love” is the latest single off August’s debut album Testimony.

Alicia Keys Performs ‘We Are Here’ on ‘Today’

Alicia Keys

A week after debuting “We Are Here” on “The Tonight Show,” Alicia Keys brought her new anthem to “Today.” While perched at a piano that read “Love,” the pregnant singer belted out the inspiring anthem and sat down to discuss her career and motherhood.

“This song gives us the opportunity to have that dialogue and start talking about what are we here to do for each other,” said Alicia.

It’s been 13 years since the 15-time Grammy winner released her debut Songs in A Minor, but she still has a lot more to do. “It’s incredible because every day is a new chance and an opportunity,” she said. “I feel like I haven’t even really gotten started.”

Her second child is due in December, and motherhood has played a pivotal role in her music. “I’ve always been an empathetic person, I’ve always related to what we’ve gone through as a humanity, but when you start seeing your kids in the mix and what they’re gonna grow up in and what they’re gonna be a part of, or how they can help change it, you get fiercer about it.”

Plus, find out what she had to say about planning Swizz Beatz’ Coming to America-inspired birthday bash.

Video: Beyoncé and Jay Z – ‘Bang Bang: Part One’

Beyoncé and Jay Z

Just days after wrapping their “On the Run Tour” with two sold-out shows in Paris, Beyoncé and Jay Z relive the magic in Part 1 of “Bang Bang.”

Directed by filmmaker and photographer Dikayl Rimmasch and soundtracked by an Ennio Morricone classic, “Bang Bang” is a trilogy of short films starring the couple that was shown during their two-and-a-half-month long tour.

In the black-and-white clip, the Carters play a modern day Bonnie and Clyde as they drive through the desert.

“In my first conversation on the telephone with Jay Z he explained his concept of On the Run,” Rimmasch told Nowness. “He said: ‘We’re not trying to do this literally, it’s not that we’re Bonnie and Clyde. We’re on the run from everything. On the run from becoming a cliché. On the run from doing the same thing again.”

“Bang Bang” is also being used in the trailer for their “On the Run” HBO special, which airs Saturday.
