André Benjamin Talks Jimi Hendrix Biopic on ‘Letterman’

André Benjamin

With the film now in theaters, André Benjamin continued his promo tour in support of the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side. Following appearances on “Ellen” and “Queen Latifah,” the OutKast rapper stopped by “The Late Show with David Letterman” on Thursday. He admitted to being nervous about taking on the role, and even had doubts while he was filming.

“There was times when I was like, ‘Man, I think I’ve done more than I can handle,’” said Dre.

He didn’t discover the rocker until his late teens/early 20s after watching Apocalypse Now. “As a black kid, I grew up on rap and all that kind of stuff, so Hendrix was just like an image, like this wild, big-haired image,” he said. “I didn’t know anything about guitars either ’cause when I was coming up, you just didn’t see black people with guitars.”

Plus, find out the “blooper” Letterman noticed that had André laughing.

“Being a mother has definitely given me more of a fierceness and understanding,” said Alicia.

Over the weekend, she brought out Israeli and Palestinian musicians to perform “We Are Here” at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. “My generation, we want peace and we want to be able to move forward and [forgive],” she said.

Her peaceful anthem was inspired by recent events including Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, and the Middle East conflict. “It’s a movement of the people so that we can gather our voices in one place and then take all of our voices to our leaders and demand the change that we want to see.”

Alicia recently posed naked with a peace sign on her belly to promote her message, and encourages others to sign up at WeAreHereMovement.com.
