Straight outta Malibu, California, Suretone Records’ rapper Shwayze has been making noise all over television and radio airwaves with “Buzzin’,” the first single off his self-titled debut. His MTV reality show chronicles the mishaps of the hip-rock star alongside his producer (Cisco Alder), DJ (DJ Skeet Skeet), and full team of assistants and managers who desperately try to keep him in check. Rap-Up.com got a chance to find out how true to the game a Malibu rapper can be.
What kind of response have you received since the show aired?
It’s crazy! We used to have a lot of people come out to our shows before, but it’s funny to see the drastic change. For example, in Chicago we got bumped up to the main stage so we had 10,000 kids come out.
You get into a lot of mischief on the show. Is everything we see on TV real?
Yeah. Me being stupid and spending money on girls instead of my car is real. I feel like anyone would do that. OK, maybe not, just me.
Would you consider your label manager Jordan Schur to be a father figure?
No, because I don’t have a father, but he’s definitely like a big brother. Jordan saw me when I was nappy and I had one cent in my pocket. I came into his office and he was like, “Yo, I wanna sign you.” I’m still really nappy and I still have one cent in my pocket, but now I got fans and stuff. I’m lucky to have him in my corner.
What’s the best part of your newfound fame?
The girls? [Laughs]
You didn’t have girls before?
No, I did. I’m getting better looks. I’m just happy my music is touching people. Not me [physically] touching people…but my music [laughs].
What has been your craziest fan encounter?
We were in San Francisco and there were these cute girls that wanted to come on the bus and go with us to the next city. We’re chilling on the bus and the next thing I know it started stinking and one of them number two’d on our bus!
In the episode where you were completing your community service, you had to pick up trash. Were you embarrassed to do that?
I was embarrassed only because the area I had to pick up trash was right where the high school I went to was. All the kids that used to look up to me when I was the senior basketball player saw me just picking up trash.
Who are some of your favorite rappers?
Snoop, 2Pac, A Tribe Called Quest, Fab 5 Freddy, and Notorious B.I.G. I was into rock mostly; I was the kid that listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine. I grew up in Malibu so a lot of my musical influence was what my friends was listening to. I got into rap later on.
Do you have any hip-hop or R&B collaborations in the mix?
Yeah, me and Lil Wayne are about to come out with a mixtape together. [Laughs] Nah, I’m just playing. That would be dope, right? Tyga and I are about to go on tour and I’m sure we’ll do mixtapes. Will.i.am also did a bunch of remixes for us.
Do you have any dream collaborations?
Wyclef, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Lenny Kravitz, and Rihanna… Just so we can be in the same room for a little bit.
