Drake: New Aaliyah Album Coming This Year

Drake and Aaliyah

Drake surprised Aaliyah fans when he debuted a new song called “Enough Said” over the weekend. But there’s more where that came from. The Young Money rapper shared details about a posthumous album from the late singer.

He and his go-to producer Noah “40” Shebib are spearheading the album, which is due later this year. “It’s all off an Aaliyah project that me and 40 are commanding,” he told MuchMusic backstage at the OVO Fest in Toronto. “40’s just doing some incredible, incredible music right now. To get 13, 14 new Aaliyah songs, everybody should be excited. It’s not about me, it’s not about 40. It’s really about her and her fans and us just getting the opportunity to give you something that we feel is great.”

While there have been unconfirmed reports that her family is not behind the project, Drake said otherwise. “The people around her, everybody from her family to her old management and label, were just like, if there’s anybody out that could do it right now, it’s me and 40. And that was an honor.”

In addition, he has enlisted some of her past collaborators. “We’re gonna pull in some classic people, like anybody who used to work with Aaliyah or that was essential in her career, we definitely hope to have them involved,” he said, adding, “We get a new Aaliyah album this year on top of everything.”

It’s likely that some of those people will include Aaliyah’s longtime collaborators Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who has expressed keen interest in the project. “The proper way for him to do that would be for me, him, and Missy to be all on the record,” the super-producer told Power 105.1 last week.
