J. Cole

After announcing an official release date, J. Cole kicked off his promo for Born Sinner. The Fayetteville rapper stopped by BET’s “106 & Park” on Wednesday to premiere the dark video for “Power Trip.” He sat down with Bow Wow and discussed the origins of the song, working with Miguel, and coming up with the concept for the visuals.

“When I was writing the song, I knew the video’s gonna be this ’cause it related back to this older song [‘Dreams’] that I had,” he said.

His sophomore album Born Sinner arrives June 25. “It’s time. I had a while,” said Cole. “It was a year-and-a-half of really working and really figuring this album out and mapping it out. I had a ton of songs that didn’t make it, but the ones that did are the ones that were meant to be.”

But don’t expect the same Cole from his 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story. “You’re gonna hear sonically and soundwise as a producer how I’ve grown,” he said. “I’m not trying to make my old stuff and I’m not trying to make anything that was made in the past. I’m trying to concoct new creations.”
