Lil Wayne Talks Packers, Kobe Bryant, & 'Straight Outta Compton' on ESPN

  /  08.24.2015

Fresh off his headlining set at the Billboard Hot 100 Festival, Lil Wayne dropped by ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday for an entertaining conversation about everything from Kobe to Compton. One of the first things the hosts wanted to know was how he ended up being a Green Bay Packers fan, considering that he’s from New Orleans. Wayne explained that his love for Green Bay started when he was a kid.

In 1995, the Packers came to New Orleans to play the Saints in the Super Bowl, and won. His father was at the game, and brought home “towels and cups” emblazoned with the Green Bay logo. Wayne explains that “in the ‘hood,” these towels and cups “would be put to use everyday. I used a Green Bay towel, a Green Bay cup everyday. So when the Madden game came out that year Brett was on the cover and I was a Packers fan for life.”

Next up, Wayne was asked about his thoughts on Tom Brady and deflate-gate. He used an intriguing metaphor to describe the scandal, which he believes “will blow over…once the season starts.”

Asked if he believed whether or not Brady knew about the ball’s deflation, Wayne answered definitively that he did.

“If your job is to make my coffee every day,” Wayne explained, “if you know I like six sugars, you’re not on your own going to put seven.”

Then, the hosts asked what Wayne thought about the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. “It was amazing,” he gushed. “I was a huge N.W.A fan, and I walked away from the movie feeling like I’ve never rapped a word in my life.”

In the second segment of the interview, Wayne was asked for his opinion on Kobe’s Lakers.

“I’m not sure what percentage of the ‘great Kobe’ we will see this year, but I can tell you what percentage of Kobe we will see: 100 percent.”

Finally, the hosts asked Wayne to project which rookie will end up as a big star this year—he picked Karl-Anthony Towns of Kentucky, the #1 overall draft pick.
