The BeyHive won’t be giving Carlos Santana any love on Valentine’s Day.
Following Adele’s controversial sweep of the Grammys big three awards (Song, Record, and Album of the Year), the rock legend said Beyoncé lost them on Sunday (Feb. 12) because she is “not a singer.”
“I think that Adele won because she can sing, sing,” he told Australian Associated Press (via The Huffington Post). “With all respect to our sister Beyoncé, Beyoncé is very beautiful to look at and it’s more like modeling kind of music ― music to model a dress ― she’s not a singer, singer, with all respect to her.
“Adele can sing, sing,” he added. “She doesn’t bring all the dancers and props, she can just stand there and she just stood there and sang the song and that’s it, and this is why she wins.”
On Sunday, Adele made it a point to say that even she felt Beyoncé deserved the Album of the Year Grammy for LEMONADE. “I can’t possibly accept this award,” she said. “I’m very humbled, and very grateful, and very gracious, but the artist of my life is Beyoncé. This album to me, the LEMONADE album, was so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental, well thought-out, beautiful, and soul baring, and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see and we appreciate that. All us artists here adore you. You are our light.”
Afterwards, Adele reportedly broke one of her Grammys in half. She later added: “I thought it was [Beyoncé’s] year. What the fuck does she have to do to win Album of the Year?”
Others have also been upset about the award, including Kendrick Lamar. “I just spoke to kdot,” tweeted TDE President Punch. “He’s really up set about the Queen B not getting her album of the year trophy.”
Beyoncé has been nominated for 62 Grammys, more than any other woman in the history of the award show. She has won 22.
