Rihanna Goes Punk for Paper

After channeling Amelia Earhart for Harper’s Bazaar, Rihanna transforms into a “high fashion clerk in a bodega of the future” for Paper magazine’s “Break the Rules” issue.

In her first cover for the magazine in nearly 10 years, Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year takes over the Alphabet City Deli & Grill in New York City for a vibrant shoot that finds her mixing high fashion with a punk twist.

On the cover, photographed by Sebastian Faena, RiRi dons spiked green hair, diamond-shaped earrings, a Christian Dior bra, and a multi-colored coat. In the other images, she rocks a purple ponytail while holding a 40 oz. and licks a popsicle as orange hair peeks out of her orange baseball cap.

“We thought it would be interesting to put a superstar like Rih in such an everyday surrounding,” says Shannon Stokes, who styled the shoot with Farren Fucci. “And Farren added the ‘future’ angle to give it a twist, so it became a challenge to envision what a girl who worked there might look like.”

The March issue of Paper starring RiRi hits newsstands March 6. See more photos from the futuristic shoot below.
