Tupac Reveals Why He Broke Up with Madonna

Tupac Shakur’s handwritten letters continue to surface. After two separate notes from the late rapper sold for thousands of dollars last year, a new one dedicated to Madonna has been uncovered.

The newly-found letter, penned while ‘Pac was in prison, finds him revealing why he broke up with the pop icon. “For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting,” he wrote. “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.”

Portions of the three-page letter, which was uncovered by TMZ, are blurred out for unknown reasons, but the parts that are legible also find ‘Pac explaining how Madonna hurt him. “In an interview where you said, ‘I’m off to rehabilitate all the rappers and basketball players’ or something to that effect,” he wrote, “those words cut me deep seeing how I had never known you to be with any rappers besides myself. It was at this moment out of hurt and a natural instinct to strike back and defend my heart and ego that I said a lot of things.”

The letter also references the infamous shooting, where ‘Pac was shot five times. The rapper also warns Madonna of “evil” people and asks for “any information…regarding Jack & crew.” He adds: “It could very well be a matter of Life & Death.”

Tupac’s Madonna letter is being auctioned off July 19-28 via Gotta Have Rock and Roll. The starting bid is $100,000, but it will likely sell for more than that. Last year, one Tupac letter sold for $35,000, while another went for $172,000.

In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Madonna spoke on her relationship with ‘Pac. “One time, I was mad at [David Letterman] when I said the f-word a lot. I was in a weird mood that day,” she said. “I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time and the thing is he got me all riled up on life in general. So when I went on the show, I was feeling very gangsta.”

Tupac died 20 years ago, in 1997, after he was shot several times on the Las Vegas strip. The crime was never solved. This year, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and All Eyez On Me — the long-awaited ‘Pac biopic — opened in theaters.
