New Music: Kehlani - 'Honey'

  /  10.03.2017

Kehlani delivers a sweet surprise for fans with the release of “Honey.”

Over an acoustic guitar, the Bay Area songstress harmonizes about being a “beautiful wreck” and a “colorful mess,” before explaining her preferences. “I like my girls like I like my honey, sweet, a little selfish,” she sings. “I like my women like I like my money, green, a little jealous.”

Taking to Instagram, the SweetSexySavage singer revealed how the song came to be. “messing around on a @geoffrocause guitar loop with my best friends became this,” she wrote.

The song has already garnered rave reviews from fans and fellow musicians, including Bryson Tiller, who called it “beautiful.”

It is unclear who the song was written about, but all signs point to Shaina “Toushai” Negron, who recently accompanied Kehlani to the Amber Rose SlutWalk.

Kehlani has been open about her sexuality in the past, including a 2015 interview with The FADER. “I got my first girlfriend in ninth grade,” she said. “Then I told her I didn’t know what I wanted and broke up with her. I think I was always just, like, you have to be gay or you have to be straight–that those were conflicting. I learned that there’s really no wrong or right, that it was cool to like everything. But it was a lot for me.”
