Chance the Rapper Livestreams Traffic Stop

  /  10.09.2017

Over the weekend, Chance the Rapper livestreamed his child’s mother Kirsten Corley’s traffic stop, claiming that he wasn’t “fin’a be playing around” with the police.

While cop car sirens shined behind him, the rapper said that he was simply being cautious by livestreaming the interaction. “Just want y’all to be here in case it gets out of hand,” he said. “Should be good though. Should be straight. I have great faith in humanity and the men and women that put on the badge — but, you know, you can’t be too careful.”

Later, the rapper reiterated his stance on police injustice, while stating that he didn’t have drugs or a gun in the car. “Big faith in the men and women that put on the uniform, but policing as a system is disproportionately racist and oppressive,” he explained.

Illinois State Police confirmed that Corley was stopped at approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 8) for a moving violation. She was given a warning, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Chance has been critical of law enforcement in the past. In August of last year, he shared his thoughts on the matter. “There’s a larger conversation we need to have about the role of police officers, their relationship to the people as enemy or executioner, when they’re not supposed to be either,” he told Billboard. “There’s also not enough pressure on internal organizations that are supposed to police the police and on judges in the justice system who are supposed to make reasonable decisions.”

Hours after the livestream, which is no longer available on Instagram, Chance posted a photo of himself with Kanye West and Dave Chappelle at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. His caption read: “My mentors treated me to lunch 💪🏾.”
