Christian “King” Combs takes hits from the ’90s and makes ’em sound so crazy with his debut mixtape, 90’s Baby, dedicated to hip-hop and R&B from the era he was raised in.
The 12-track project features many sources of inspiration from the East and West coasts. This includes Snoop Dogg’s “Tha Shiznit,” 2Pac’s “All Eyez On Me,” and even his famous dad Diddy’s “Señorita.”
Combs, 20, closes the album with his own version of 50 Cent’s “U Not Like Me,” which dropped in 2002. “I’m too wavy,” he raps. “Bad Boy behind the baby / And you not like me.” The Bad Boy stamp also appears on the cover with a throwback shot of the father-and-son duo. Meanwhile, guests include members of his CYN crew.
90’s Baby also arrives after King Combs’ “All Eyez On C” music video. The Kaito-directed fun-in-the-sun clip features lowriders hopping up and down while Combs raps over the Tupac Shakur classic. The track raised eyebrows due to ‘Pac’s storied feud with Diddy and his Bad Boy empire.
Recently, Combs also opened up about how much the ’90s inspired his art. “It’s definitely been important to me and it really started from not really having beats and trying to find my own sound,” he told Billboard. “So I was just listening to a lot of beats on YouTube just to try to get a vibe and it happened that the throwback ’90s vibe was like the songs that I delivered the best on. It just came together and honestly, that’s my favorite time in music. I just like that vibe, the whole feel, the whole essence of the ’90s and just the swag.”
