Watch J. Cole's 'KOD' Trailer

  /  04.19.2018

The countdown is on. Only hours before dropping his fifth album KOD, J. Cole releases a psychedelic trailer that aims to explain the LP’s different meanings.

With his voice pitched down, Jermaine breaks down the first acronym significance, “Kids on Drugs.” “If I turn on the TV right now,” he says, “it’s not going to take long for there to be an advertisement that pops up, that says, ‘Are you feeling down? Have you been having lonely thoughts?’ And then, they shove a pill in your face. The first response to any problems is [to] medicate.”

The second meaning is “King Overdosed.” This, he says, represents his own afflictions with escapism, including “alcohol, phone addiction, women.”

Finally, the third meaning is “Kill Our Demons.” “Kill Our Demons is finding that shit, whether it be from traumatic childhood experiences, lack of attention, confidence issues, insecurities, whatever it is,” he adds, “we’ve gotta be honest with ourselves, look in the mirror, and look inside, and ask ourselves questions like, ‘What’s causing me to run to this thing as an escape?’ Once I find the root of that, let me look at it in its face and see what it really is.”

Cole posted the trailer and then pulled it from YouTube. The album is due at midnight and is his first full-length release since 2016’s 4 Your Eyez Only.
