Drake Addresses Dad's Claims That His Lyrics Are Lies

  /  10.08.2019

Drake is caught in a family feud.

During a recent interview with Nick Cannon on Power 106, his father Dennis Graham shot down claims that he was an absentee father. Despite his son’s lyrics to the contrary, Graham says he has always been present in his son’s life and that Drake embellished their relationship to sell records.

“I had a conversation with Drake about that,” he told Cannon. “I have always been with Drake. I talked to him if not every day, every other day, and we really got into a deep conversation about that. I said, ‘Drake, why are you saying all of this different stuff about me, man? This is not cool.’ And he goes, ‘Dad, it sells records.’ And I said, ‘OK, well cool.'”

After hearing his father’s comments, a “hurt” Drake responded to claims that he lied about their relationship, insisting his lyrics are based on truth.

“Woke up today so hurt, man. My father will say anything to anyone that’s willing to listen to him,” Drizzy wrote on Instagram Stories. “It’s sad when family gets like this, but what can we really do? That’s the people we are stuck with. Every bar I ever spit was the truth and the truth is hard for some people to accept.”

Drake has documented their strained relationship in the past on songs including 2013’s “From Time.” “I’ve been dealing with my dad, speaking a lack of patience,” he raps on the Nothing Was the Same cut. “Just me and my old man getting back to basics / We’ve been talking ’bout the future and time that we wasted / When he put that bottle down, girl that ni**a’s amazing.”

He also addressed his absentee father on “Look What You’ve Done” off 2011’s Take Care. “And my father living in Memphis now, he can’t come this way / Over some minor charges and child support / That just wasn’t paid, damn / Boo-hoo, sad story, black American dad story.”
