The drama will be televised.

An untitled Mary J. Blige documentary is currently in production from Amazon Studios and Entertainment One (eOne). Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth, the film will launch on Amazon Prime Video. Blige, along with Sean “Diddy” Combs, will serve as executive producer under her Blue Butterfly banner.

The announcement arrives on the 25th anniversary of Blige’s seminal album My Life. The film will offer an intimate look into the emotional journey of Blige’s struggles with poverty, abuse, addiction, and heartbreak, and follows the R&B icon as she heads out on a tour to perform her sophomore album for the first time ever.

“We all know Mary J. Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records,” said Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios. “But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J. Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing. We are thrilled to share with our worldwide Prime Video customers this exclusive, never-before-seen, inside look into the global legend, Mary J. Blige.”

Added Tara Long, eOne’s President of Global Unscripted, Television, “I have long admired Mary as an artist, an icon, and a strong, fearless woman. The story of her life has inspired us enormously and we are thrilled to be making this project with her and her team, Ashaunna [Ayars] and Nicole [Jackson]. Mary’s album My Life is both iconic and tremendously impactful, we hope that by bringing it to screens we can continue to inspire audiences around the world as her music has done for decades.”

The Oscar-nominated Blige is also set to star in “Power Book 2: Ghost,” a spinoff of the popular Starz series “Power,” which is being executive produced by 50 Cent.
