Kanye West Demands Final Approval of 'jeen-yuhs' Netflix Documentary

  /  01.21.2022

Kanye West is calling out the creators of the upcoming Netflix documentary jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, Ye demanded final approval of the three-part documentary before it hits the streaming service next month.

“I’m going to say this kindly for the last time,” he wrote. “I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix. Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance.”

jeen-yuhs, which was filmed over the course of 20 years, was helmed by Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, who directed two of West’s first music videos, “Through the Wire” and the third iteration of “Jesus Walks.”

Netflix reportedly paid $30 million for the documentary. While Ye is not creatively involved in the production, he allowed himself to be filmed by Coodie & Chike for the past two decades.

The “intimate and revealing” series explores the rapper-turned-billionaire’s formative days trying to break through and his life today as a global brand and artist, with appearances from JAY-Z, Pharrell, and Kanye’s late mother, Donda West.

In an interview with Variety earlier this week, the directors revealed they had final cut approval over the documentary.

“I said, ‘Dude, you have to trust me.’ And he did, 100%,” Simmons said. “Mind you, when his team and the business-people have gotten involved, they’re of course going to have their say. But I needed to tell this story. It’s not about making Kanye likable or not. The footage doesn’t lie. What makes the film special is that it’s not something definitive; it’s his journey through my vision.”

jeen-yuhs is slated to premiere virtually at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday (Jan. 23) before streaming on Netflix starting Feb. 16.
