John Legend went back to his roots, surprising the congregation at Calvary Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. Taking a break from touring with Sade, the G.O.O.D. Music singer put a smile on churchgoers’ faces as he performed Aretha Franklin’s version of “How I Got Over” with a gospel choir.

“I thought it’d be cool to kinda go back and do something that explored my roots a little bit,” said Mr. Legend, who paid his way through school by being a director of music at a church. “It was just like church growing up for me. This is definitely reminding me of my childhood.”
