Women’s rights group UltraViolet claimed a “huge victory” after Reebok dropped Rick Ross for his pro-rape lyrics. But the decision didn’t sit well with some in the hip-hop community including Ross’ peers.
The sneaker company, which also has deals with Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys, and Tyga, severed ties with the Miami rapper after facing pressure from the public.
In response, Rozay’s protégé Meek Mill put Reebok on blast. “Reeboks right next 2 FILA when it come 2 sneaks that shit corny… I was only was feeling swizz & tyga projects… #boom,” tweeted the Maybach Music MC, who has a deal with Puma.
But he wasn’t the only one voicing his opinion. Slim Thug fired off a series of tweets in support of Ross.
“[Reebok] ain’t care about all the dope he was rapping bout selling when they signed him but now they tripping after all that promo,” said the Houston rapper. “All I’m saying is its a rap song and he didn’t say he bout to rape a bitch so he shouldn’t have lost a deal over it.”
He continued, “Before we know it rappers are not going to be able to curse no mo on their albums cause somebody whose not a rap fan was offended fuck that.”
Earl Sweatshirt was appalled by the decision. “this rick ross shit is ridiculous this ni**a has been a prominent cocaine / mass murder rap bro since i was like 10 wtf fuck reebok,” said the Odd Future member. “ni**as need to get off his head. if you like how his music sounds than listen to it. if you dont then dont listen to it and shut the fuck up.”
