Lorde

Lorde rocketed to the top of the charts and became a critics’ darling at the same time. With her single “Royals” holding down the No. 1 spot for the ninth week, the 17-year-old New Zealand sensation follows it up with the video for “Team,” which was shot in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

In the clip, which was inspired by a dream she had, she rules a secret world for misfit teenagers, who don’t look like the ones on TV.

“This video was born from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen,” explained Lorde. “I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”

The song can be found on her debut album Pure Heroine, which Rolling Stone ranked No. 7 on its 50 Best Albums of 2013.
