Tinashe celebrated her album release with a visit to Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” on Tuesday. The “2 On” singer sat down with Angela Yee and Charlamagne to explain the origin of her name (African for “We are with God”) and the definition of “2 On.”
“‘2 On’ is basically being a little too buzzed, a little bit too faded,” she said. “But in a good way, not to the point where you’re like passed out. You’re just turnt up.”
The 21-year-old got her start at the age of three doing TV and commercials (She appeared on “Two and a Half Men” with Charlie Sheen at 15) and started pursuing music at 14 as part of the girl group The Stunners. She went solo at 18 and put out three mixtapes before signing to RCA Records.
Her debut Aquarius has been receiving rave reviews, but she doesn’t feel “2 On” is necessarily an accurate representation of the album. “My music as a whole, there’s a lot more depth to it, there’s just a lot more sophistication musically than ‘2 On’ maybe represents.”
She grew up in La Crescenta, Calif. with her two younger brothers, Thulani and Kudzai. Her parents (her father is from Zimbabwe and her mother is from Iowa) emotionally and financially supported her while she pursued her career.
She revealed that she is single (“[Dating is] not my priority right now”), but she looks for loyalty, honesty, and respect in a man.
