With her second album Blackheart available now, Dawn Richard debuts the animated video for “Tide: The Paradox Effect.” In the slick and futuristic clip, which she directed with digital studio We Were Monkeys, the former Danity Kane member appears as a gladiator who walks through a galactic battlefield before reaching the sun. The video is symbolic of her own journey.
“It took a lot to come to this point, and this project is definitely the deepest, darkest place I’ve been,” the singer-songwriter tells The New York Times. “It became more than just an album when I decided to keep it going. It was my test. It was my therapy, and I had to go through it.”
The song does not appear on her album, and can only be found on the vinyl edition.
“I’m really excited about the video. It’s my first animation and I think the best work I’ve ever done,” Dawn tells Rap-Up.
Blackheart is already No. 1 on the iTunes Electronic chart. Dawn will celebrate the release with three shows in New York (1/22), L.A. (2/5), and San Francisco (2/7).
