Joining stars like Jay Z, Beyoncé, and Vic Mensa with voter encouragement speeches, Gucci Mane delivers a thought-provoking message about civic responsibility.

Guwop addressed a crowd at Florida Memorial University’s “Young Gets It Done” rally on Monday (Nov. 7), where he urged fans to vote.

“Young people have an opportunity to make a big difference,” he said. “Not just any young people, the young people in this room. Young people of color. Young people who come from neighborhoods surrounding this college.

“Vote, not because I’m telling you to, or not because anybody is telling you to,” he added, “But vote because this is about y’all future. You can make a vote to stop all the police brutality. You can make a vote to stop all this mass incarceration.”

Speaking of this, Guwop’s own history came up during this speech. As Exoffenders.net explains regarding Georgia, a convicted felon’s “voting rights are restored after full sentence is complete. This includes probation, parole, and prison.” Gucci, who was released from prison in May, acknowledged that he still cannot hit the polls due to his most recent legal woes.

“All these issues are not just personal to you and your families, they impact me,” he explained. “I wish that I had my right to vote. I feel like after you serve your time, don’t punish me for the rest of my life. It’s something that I already did my time for.”
