Lil Yachty and Carly Rae Jepsen make it out of sight on their remake of Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s classic 1988 smash “It Takes Two.”
The duo teased the Target-sponsored track earlier this week and now, they return with the full version. With Mike WiLL Made-It manning the boards, the cut carries the original’s essence and an updated feel.
Lil Boat even pulls from Rob Base’s flow for his verse, flipping a few lines to make it his own. “I wanna rock right now,” he raps. “I’m Lil Yachty and I’m down if you’re down / I’m not the most lyrical kid known / Yet I’m known to keep the party goin’.”
Carly Rae drops some melodic bars of her own on the track, a task she said was daunting. “It was one of the most intimidating moments of my career being in the room with Mike WiLL and Yachty and 16 other friends of theirs just partying,” she told EW. “They’re like, ‘Alright, go perform your first-ever rap in front of actual professional rappers!’ There’s nothing more terrifying than that. But they were really helpful.”
Directed by Roman Coppola (“Mozart in the Jungle”) and choreographed by Mandy Moore (La La Land), the full three-minute spot is set to air during the Grammys on Sunday (Feb. 12). Before that, Yachty and Jepsen teamed up for shorter clips, including one that finds Lil Boat moonwalking, while pulling Carly in a cart full of smiley face emojis.
