Missy Elliott met her “funky white sister” during a surprise appearance on “Ellen.”
During Thursday’s episode of the daytime talk show, Missy joined Mary Halsey onstage for a surprise performance of “Work It.” Halsey went viral over the summer with a video of herself performing the 2002 hit, which got Missy’s stamp of approval.
Halsey performed the Under Construction single for Ellen’s audience before Missy surprised her by making a cameo and rapping alongside her. She freaked out, but quickly regained her composure and they finished the song together before embracing.
During an interview with Ellen, Halsey revealed that she first learned “Work It” in 2003 and performed it during a karaoke contest at Rhode Island’s Goddard Park. “I’ve been singing that song for 15 years,” she said. “The reaction that I got was so positive that it became my go-to song. Everybody wants to hear it.”

She later sat down alongside Missy, who praised the viral sensation. “When she first said, ‘Missy’s funky white sister,’ I’m like, ‘Who is this?!'” said Missy. “So when I listen, I’m like, she knows all the words, but the sound effects–she made the elephant noise, all of that. I thought it was the most amazing thing.”
Missy surprised Halsey with a signed custom T-shirt, while Ellen gave her a jacket inscribed with “Missy’s Funky White Sister” on the back.
