Chris Brown has avoided legal trouble this year, but he’s now facing criminal charges over his pet monkey.

According to legal documents, obtained by TMZ, the Los Angeles City Attorney is charging Brown with two counts of having a restricted species without a permit, which carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail.

Brown faced backlash on social media after posting video of his baby capuchin monkey named Fiji playing with his daughter Royalty. Some of his critics thought it was dangerous for the exotic animal to be around a 3-year-old, but Brown defended his decision.

People notified the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife about Brown owning the pet, which prompted the investigation.

Brown didn’t have a permit for the monkey, so authorities obtained a search warrant and planned to raid Brown’s home, but he voluntarily agreed to surrender the monkey.

He is due in court Feb. 6.
