You may know Kandi Burruss as one of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” but before she gained notoriety as part of the popular reality series, the Atlanta native was a successful singer-songwriter, who rose to fame in the ’90s as part of R&B girl group Xscape and wrote some of music’s biggest hits including TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.”
Rap-Up TV caught up with Kandi in Burbank, Calif., to talk about her first album in a decade, Kandi Koated, due December 14. The project boasts collaborations with Jazze Pha, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Bryan-Michael Cox, Blac Elvis, and Ne-Yo on “Me and You.” She sampled OutKast’s “Elevators (Me & You)” for the latter love song and even gives us a preview!
The Grammy winner also reunites with her fellow Xscape member Tameka “Tiny” Cottle on “Super Woman.” “It’s really an anthem for single mothers out there who [are] really trying to make things happen and make lives better for their children, and keep a smile on their kids’ faces even though the situation may not be the perfect ideal situation,” explains the single mom.
Plus, Kandi shares how Tiny is coping in the wake of her husband T.I.’s return to prison, which is expected to commence next week.
