New Music: Dawn Richard – ‘Judith’ + ‘Valkyrie’

Judith and Valkyrie

The Blackheart era continues. Following the buzz record “Meteors,” Dawn Richard debuts two new singles off her upcoming sophomore album. The Danity Kane singer allowed her fans to pick their favorite in an online contest, but instead of choosing one song, she put both on iTunes.

Dawn teams with producer Cronos on “Judith,” which was inspired by the Gustav Klimt painting “Judith.” “It’s the story of a painting that is priceless and quite iconic being forgotten after being hung in a home too long,” she said.

The Deonte-assisted “Valkyrie” was written by Dawn and produced by Noisecastle III. “I wanted a record that was packed with confidence, a sort of cocky reminder that you will remember my mark,” said Dawn.

Both songs are now available on iTunes.

@DKW, well if you knew her music and followed her you would know that she’s not trying. She listens to music like this and its a shame when artist have to dumb down their music for ppl like u to get it.

@jo vivrant, it’s not that deep lol. I like Dawn and a lot of other artists. I know she’s different and I respect her for what she’s doing. I just thought I’d reply to a comment I thought was funny. Good day!

I am 100% sure you don’t know half of my music collection! If you think this is intellectual music it shows where your standards are!
These dumb stupid girls who hide behind gimmicks and outfits, masks and catch phrases need to learn one thing:
    Talent comes first!
Be good at what you do and write and let the music do the talking!
She was so desperate to be different from day one of her solo time.
Not knowing that the garbage she was wearing on her body and head is leftovers from a 3rd class drag act from Tijuana!
    LMAO

@Truth, She is being herself love. Just because she’s not doing things the way you might like them done doesn’t mean she’s not being herself. Anyone that’s saying she isn’t “being herself” doesn’t really know Dawn as an artist.

Dawn is the truth! I freaking love Valkyrie! It’s a BANGER but the lyrics still have a deeper story which is what I love about Dawn’s music. I like Judith but I just wish it was a little longer. All in all, this chick continues to release incredible music and do what she wants with her career in such an unapologetic manner. You can only respect it.

I’ve tried to get into her music but I can’t. She’s beautiful and smart but the music doesn’t get me. I’ve watched her interviews and I get her motives but her music just screams trying too hard. It’s more production than vocals. It’s 2013 and I’m sick of that. No shade.

Shit ain’t been the same since her and Drewsky ain’t working no more. This ain’t it. At all. Dawn I’m here for you, really I am but imma save my coins for the day you get it together.

Wtf these songs wont even chart AT ALL. She needs to just sign with a major label if she wants to be taken seriously. You cant come out with shit like this being independent and expect to win.

Dawnie pooh. If being different hasn’t gotten you signed yet I would just be like everything and everyone else. If you can’t beat them, join them then do like Pink and become the artist you want to be. Being different like this too soon is gonna keep you in the indie circuit.

    music lover Reply:

@csquad_4ever, That’s the thing though, she’s already stated that she’s not trying to get signed. She’s making music to be creative and different. She has stated that if a record label or deal comes along w/ the right deal, then she would take it. Not a lot of people are going to understand her sound. It’s different but yet it flows. She’s doing just fine. The hearts want more DAWN!!!

Danity Kane please get back together so mutha Dawn can get some real coins cuz the solo thing is TIIIIIIRRREEEEDDD. She had like one song I really liked. Everything else I can get from Brandy, Kelis and Rihanna babe. We don’t need you to continue these “tribute” albums. Bring back DK!

I wish people on this post would show Dawn a bit more support. I don’t think she’s “trying” to be anything but herself. I think you’re just being too quick to judge because you’re not used to the sound. She doesn’t really have too much to work with financially and the stuff she puts out is better than what most artists put out. I’m proud of her and her progress. Her artistic vision is unmatchable…especially in the R&B world.

I am a huge fan of dawns and have supported her since Ataletaleheart, and I hate to say this but the music that she’s dropped lately has not been impressive & I know that’s she’s talented and has what it takes to make it. I think what might mess get up is her & drew parting ways, he was a very HUGE part of her success and made some of the best music while working with him. I still support her 100%, but its like the saying goes “if its not broke, don’t fix it”

  17. @KingCoward

LOL @ people saying the music not the same without Drew.

I mean, he was good…but let’s not be ridiculous. Haha.

BlackHeart was meant to be dark and different…she warned us that it was going to become less commercial.

If you like the typical R&B chick shit…BlackHeart ain’t for you.

I like “Meteors”, “Valkyrie”, and “Judith”…all 10x more creative than anything on Armor On or Goldenheart.

@@KingCoward, ok Dawn and or Dawn’s Team lol. No one but you guys believe that one lol.

    @Hmm, Actually I don’t work for her…but I do work in the industry ;)

Can’t wait until DK reunites, and everybody gonna be acting brand new jumping on the Heart bandwagon once she becomes popular again.

Gotta love this fickle music-buying audience…lol.

Dawn!!! Please go ahead and release BlackHeart!!! I sit by and try to find more music from you b/c I have become a fan of your sound. You are truly an ARTIST as well as a performer. I will admit, at first, Valkyrie had to grow on me. But, that’s ok. B/c sometimes art makes you feel uncomfortable and you have made me see your music as not just stuff you listen to when you going to the club or something…but I see it and appreciate it as art. BlackHeart…leggo!!
