Video: Dawn Richard – ‘Riot/Northern Lights’

Dawn Richard

One year after the release of her critically-acclaimed debut Goldenheart, Dawn Richard’s video for “Riot” and “Northern Lights” has surfaced online. The Danity Kane songstress shot the seven-and-a-half-minute visuals in May of last year, but it was put on the back burner after she parted ways with her production partner Druski.

The video picks up where “’86″ left off and marks the second and third chapters in her visual choreography film. Dawn unleashes some fierce moves as she battles her opponents, dressed in her warrior princess garb.

“Dance is the narrator of this visual story,” explained Dawn. “The fashion and image look this way because it is an ongoing story.”

Watch Dawn step to the front lines in the dance-heavy clip.

Yaaaaaaaaaassss Dawn!! *kicks lamp over* This girl is a freaking force!!! I see the story! I’m glad it leaked bc I was bothered that the story wasn’t finished. 86 left off as a cliffhanger. Ugh. And the fact that all of her videos are amazing quality… she had no label at the time. All out pocket! Smh. Amazing. Even though the era is over, I appreciate this a lot. Dawn works VERY hard. And I believe she’s working on Blackheart while in DK. Hustler at its finest.

@KeepinItFunky you talk about a hustler? How about Dawn saying she already finished & came up w/ the tracklisting to Blackheart & already working on RedemptionHeart #AlwaysaCoupleStepsAhead than we may think/know!!

I am speechless! This video was important for us to transition into “The Black Era” and I am happy that it was released. Now, the video for Valkyrie + Judith (Chapters 4 + 5) will be even better, not to forget “Blackheart” which is already completed!

Thank you to whoever leaked this video. It was excellent. I really enjoy Dawn’s videos because you always get a visual that comes across more as art rather than just a music video. There’s a story and a vision with everything she does. I appreciate artists like her that absolutely refuse to conform to what the industry wants them to be. I’m looking forward to seeing what Danity Kane has coming this year and anything Dawn does in the future as a solo artist.

She’s artists meaning she can sing and perform (dance0 but as for the entertaining (the feeling or magic touch to bring it all together), she lacks! For example when Beyonce/Michael/Janet/Justin Timberlake/Chris Brown/Usher & etc performs there’s a magic touch that comes from them not only on stage but through videos as well. With all the creativity and talent within this video, i didn’t feel like i would become a fan more so just clap and job well done!

I never thought about Dawn Richard during her time in her previous groups. That changed when she became a solo artist. I’ve been here for her solo career – the sound and the visuals have been very much to my liking. It seems like the majority just want something easy to listen to/watch (read: something to shake their behinds to in clubs), so they sleep on music like hers. But at least it exists for those who can appreciate it.

I have yet to see dawn perform live but I know she goes OFF!
Come to toronto and show us that undeniable talent that you posses.

It’s a shame this video is coming out so late I hate that about the delivery of music and visuals (i.e. rihanna – pour it up)

This was shot in the summer and creative differences definitely Never aid the promotion of a record to the public.

I still say that she should’ve remained solo and continued to push “BlackHeart.” Her solo stuff is far more interesting IMO.
