Rap-Up.com || New Music: JoJo – ‘In the Dark’

The wait is over. Four years after the release of her sophomore album The High Road, JoJo makes her much-awaited return to music. Not even label drama can stop the 19-year-old songstress from shining bright on “In the Dark,” the first offering from her mixtape Can’t Take That Away From Me, premiering September 7 exclusively on Rap-Up.com.

“I think ‘In the Dark’ is different than anything people have heard from me before,” JoJo says of the song, which was produced by Jordan Gatsby and co-written by JoJo and Gatsby. “It’s a very sensual record and there’s an undertone of sadness to it.”

The track’s experimental sound does not necessarily reflect the material on her upcoming third studio album All I Want Is Everything. Instead, it’s a thank you to her loyal fans who’ve stuck by her throughout the years.

It has a really sick beat, but it is no where near a comeback. I am very dissapointed in JoJo. If she realesed “Forever In My Life” it would have been a million times better than this. We were all ready to see the JoJo we know and love shine again, and I dont even want to show this song to anyone, because it’s that dissapointing. I had high hopes for her, but she didnt deliver. I really hope that there is at least one song on the mixtape that is atleast not half bad to hold me off until the album. Here’s looking toward ‘All I Want Is Everything’ I guess..

@Joe If u saw Jojos latest Rap-up Interview she said In The Dark is different than anything she has ever done, very different and unexpected from her. Experimenting with different sounds but to still fit her voice. This is only from her mixtape not her album but u cant deny that this is a good song. Her album will most likely not be like this and we will hear those songs we really love. Shes growing as an artist u cant keep her in a box.

No, it does not sound like a radio clone song that appeals to everyone and has HIT pop potential. JoJo is an artist and because of that she will just create music she feels is HOT, unique, different…not what sounds like a pop hit that everyone will love.

I love the dark tones of this song…very sensual…and I can picture a raw black/white video…shadows…her dressed in sexy black outfits…city late at night..dark alleys…just to capture the mood of the song…

I love it!! I also appreciate how JoJo/Rap-Up took the time to fully explain to us the musical direction for this mixtape and what it is all about. The whole purpose of doing a mixtape is to be able to experiment and do things you normally wouldn’t do. I saw JoJo doing an interview with Rap-Up and she said this is totally different than what her album is going to sound like. Most artists give us the same ‘ole same sound/vibe every time they release music. They are totally predictable. I LOVE how JoJo is playing it smart and is taking this opportunity to give us something different. I’m sure her official album will sound more pop and will appeal to radio. I think it’ll be what we are used to hearing from JoJo and I can’t wait for it to be released. In the meantime, I appreciate her courage to take a chance and put this out there for the whole world to hear/judge. That takes some serious balls (LOL). YOU GO JOJO – YOUR FANS LOVE YOU!

P.S. – I don’t think JoJo is going to go down the “I’m gonna slut it up to win” route. In the Dark feels artsy and the meaning behind it is kind of sad. It sounds like it is about a girl who longs to have more with a guy than just a sexual relationship. I can’t wait for the video. I bet it’ll be more abstract and not commercial. Get the f*ck outta here! Trust me all it needs is Kanye to slay on the bridge. The only thing I didn’t like was the Janet Jackson whispering because I actually like to understand the words. But it sounds so much better than the stuff that leaked. It stays true to JoJo while at least having some commercial appeal. I could see this going top 20 of course with A LOT of promo and Kanye slaying. This sounds like something he would do.

Though it’s not showing off her vocals that much, the song is so sexy and oddly refreshing. The piano and bass line are just perfect. The song is so fresh.

This is the perfect teaser from Miss JoJo. I can’t wait for more from this talented, intelligent and humble woman.

And she obviously couldn’t have released ‘Forever In My Life’ because it became a viral video, and if she released that song on All I Want Is Everything, then she would bascailly be selling something that millions of people have already downloaded. I don’t think it is going to be a chart topping single b/c it is just from her mixtape. Don’t you have to officially put out a song and have your label support it for it to go up the charts? HOLY! I was one of the haters up there. BUT NOW. This is the hottest thing out there for me! Take a couple listens and you will be hooked. It feels so sexual, but not slutty. Feels so diffrent, but in the best way. I really dont know why I love this song? THIS IS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. But this exceeds so much more. It really is a masterpiece. SHE IS SO GENIUS.

That combination of the beat and vocals was straight original! Most original shit out… tell Lady Gaga I said it! Whether you think it shows off her vocal range or not you have to admit this is craazy good! Give it a few listens, I promise it will grow on you. Props to Jojo for being different and trying something new… this mixtape is going to be a killer. Pure MONSTER! <3

“In The Dark,” which was co-written along with producer Jordan Gatsby, is a chilly, slow-burning grinder with enough sax appeal to be safely declared one of the sexiest things I’ve heard.

I mean, what with all those whispered coos and heavy breathing throughout the bridges and chorus? CHILD, PLEASE. “I only know him in the dark,” JoJo croons to pleasurable new heights as the chorus bass beats grind and swirl against a minimal twinkling of bright piano.

The track is also heavily processed, but with that kind of intentional robot warble that says to the listener, “LOOK HERE. This is just for a cool, spacey effect. Not to mask a bad voice.” Besides, we all know JoJo can blow, so don’t get butthurt about it.

But seriously, how sick is this beat? OOF!

thank God this song is not part of the album, nor it represents the whole album cause this is so sexy i don’t think many people would want Jojo to go all the way.. though i like this song, very unique and passionate.. i wish “Wrong Man For The Job” is included in her 3rd album it’s much stronger and up-beat song..
