Can't Take That Away From Me

Label drama may have impeded the release of JoJo’s new album, but nothing can stand between her and her fans. The 19-year-old songbird breaks her silence with her mixtape Can’t Take That Away From Me. Soulful sounds and live instruments make up the 11-track set, with production from Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, Kenna, Neff-U, Oak, Beau Dozier, and Jordan Gatsby, who produced the first single “In the Dark.”

While she explores new territory on the collection, it is not necessarily indicative of the sound on her forthcoming studio album All I Want Is Everything. “I was just able to take more of a risk,” JoJo told Rap-Up.com. “It is all over the place, just like me.”

The empowered singer took to her blog to share her thoughts on the long-awaited release day. “In releasing this mixtape, I’m affirming that even though some have tried they CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME,” she wrote. “What is THAT? My voice, my spirit, my drive, my dreams. As you listen to these songs, I hope that they make your head nod, your mind tick, your emotions move, your belly laugh, and maybe elicit a ‘stanky face’ or something ;) Lol.”

    Wow, her voice has really matured. It’s magical to listen to and insane how far she has come as an artist. She’s so much more talented and has such a better voice than alot of the other artists out there and this mix tape really shows her range off. I love it. So grateful that JoJo released this. Really appreciate listening to this-it’s so beautiful, fun, exciting, moving, dance worthy, sit in silence worthy, all sorts of emotions at once.

    And, an AWESOME Mixtape at that! Wow! It completely blew me outta the water on how 4 years and maturity did! She’s got a voice that’s unique, but comparable to Rihanna – and, stands up perfectly! Top tracks on the CD are “Why Didn’t You Call”, “When Does It Go Away” and of course, “In The Dark”.

    She’s distanced herself form the “Preppy pop” sound that ya hear…Disney pumping out these days…and, i truly believe that THIS is her…and, not a bunch of writers!

    Now, i’ve LOVED JoJo since – FOREVER…but, for her to add a hip-hop element…and, not only that…but, to release it for FREE….is outstanding! If she didn’t appeal to older people before…she will now!

    what she needs in new producer & writer such as James Fauntleroy & TC.

    i love the song when does it go away, but it would of been SO MUCH BETTER with just JoJo and not Travis Garland. If he was going to be on it, JoJo should of at least started the song. I always want to fast forward to when she starts singing. Hey, it’s a compliment to u JoJo :)

I can’t belive it took them that damn long just to get a deal done unbeliveable!She has pure talent and still she’s been gettin slept on all these years.     This mixtape is just perfect. She really outdid herself with this one. She’s grown so much as a writer and an artist. You can tell this all comes straight from her heart. It’s a beautiful collection of songs from a beautiful vocalist, beautiful young woman and a beautiful soul.

    My favorites: 1, 2, 3, 9, 11

    1. “Can’t Take That Away From Me”

    Beautiful melody. Her voice really shines here. Love the message.

    2. “Running on Empty”

    The guitar line really drives this one. Super catchy. Definitely one of my favorites.

    3. “Pretty Please”

    Shit. Did JoJo just give Sasha Fierce a run for her money? I actually like this track more than Single Ladies. I love the juxtaposition of the major and minor harmonies. It’s genius.

    4. “Why Didn’t You Call”

    So many interesting textures here. She really found her nitch here with this assertive slow jam.

    5. “Just a Dream”

    A total surprise! So raw and gorgeous. Beautiful vocals. I hope we hear more acoustic stuff from this girl.

    6. “When Does It Go Away” featuring Travis Garland

    A perfect pop power ballad. Instantly catchy. This rivals “No Air” with Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks. It’s crazy to think that these are the cuts that didn’t make the album. I can tell we’re in for a treat when the album is released.

    7. “My Time Is Money”

    She shows us the sheer power of her voice here. This holds up to anything on Christina Aguilera’s “Back To Basics” album. JoJo is pure talent.

    8. “What You Like” featuring Jordan Gatsby

    I hadn’t heard of Jordan Gatsby before these tracks, but I’m thoroughly impressed with his work. I love this futuristic spin on the 80s R&B slow jam.

    9. “In the Dark”

    Another from Jordan and it’s even more stellar. This is simple and sexy. I have this track on repeat.

    10. “Boy Without a Heart”

    This reminds me of her song “How To Touch A Girl” off her last album. It’s impressive to hear how much she’s grown since then.

    11. “All I Want Is Everything”

    This track has JoJo playing in the big leagues with Jill Scott and Angie Stone. I know JoJo is a huge fan of Jill and it shows. This song is so pure – you can tell this comes straight from her heart.

    the reason why Miley and Demi and some other artists are constantly being shot by paparazzi is b/c they themselves or their handlers tip them off. It is a major PR game in Hollywood. As big as Justin Timberlake is, you rarely see him in the gossip mags. Why? B/C he hides from paparazzi. Some of these media whore wanna be celebs invite these guys to come shoot them. I’m not saying it never happens naturally, but I know FOR A FACT Miley tips off photographers herself so she can continue to be in gossip mags/blogs.
    On another note, I saw pictures of JoJo, Emma Roberts, & another girl shopping at Barney’s on JustJaredJr.com today :-)

    Sorry, I don’t like Can’t Take That Away From Me. It’s so unlike Jojo’s songs in the past. I was expecting more of R&B and Soul from JoJo. This one just sounds like Miley Cyrus-ish :(
