Omarion pays tribute to the late Aaliyah with his cover of “One in a Million,” included on his new DJ Drama-hosted mixtape The Awakening. “Paying homage like we should. We love you Aaliyah. We do this for you,” says the R&B crooner before putting his spin on Babygirl’s classic, like The-Dream before him. Listen below and let us know what you think of O’s version.

This is just ok but I never liked “One In a Million” anyway. Some of yall aaliyah fans stay getting mad cause some1 simply covered the song. He didn’t make this a single or put it on a album, just a mixtape. Of course yall have freedom to say how yall feel, but to me NO SONG on this earth is exempted from being covered so shove it

@Pheonix_Wright, you have an opinion, don’t let these haters tell you otherwise. I love “One in a Million”, but I don’t see anything wrong with a cover by a different artist. It’s a form of homage. The original is still available to listen to, it’s not like the remake will take the place of the original. I respect Omarion for paying homage to her.

LOL at all these comments. While no artist is untouchable including Aaliyah, I really wish some songs weren’t remade. He gets props for showing Aaliyah love but his singing on this track has a lot to be desired. On the bright side, at least he didn’t remake “I Care 4 U”.

It’s a good effort from Omarion, but nothing compares to the original. From a scale from one to ten I would give him a 7 1/2 his voice could have been a little softer. I guess you could say he put his spin on this song.

You can pay homage to someone without redoing the the whole thing. I would have rather he used the beat and did his own original song to pay homage. Notice no female singers are doing a cover of this track, they know to respect the True queen of R&B.

This really wasn’t as horrible as people were making it out. I feel like some Aaliyah fans be doing too much. They act like her stuff is untouchable, when truly it’s not. It’s not even about it being touched, it’s about you admiring the person & paying respects by doing things like a cover. It continue’s the artist’s legacy & let’s everyone know how special they are by touching another artist. He wasn’t doing a “imitation” of “One in A Million” he did a cover. He put his own lil spin on it, that’s partly the purpose because when you do cover you pay respects to the original artist, but you make a stamp on in to say “this is my version.” At parts he did slightly over do it, & it was a bit rugged than buttery smooth. But it wasn’t that bad. Better than The-Dreams, but not better than Aaliyah’s original. But, nothing to complain about. Be happy artist still love & respect her. Y’all would be mad if no one talked about her no more.

I said it’s not like it can’t be touched, meaning no one can cover it. If it’s out, it can be touched/covered. She isn’t exempt. No one is. Period. Why don’t you sit down & get a life. What happened to a shout out. Drake, Jay, J.Cole, etc…all shout her out. I dunno what possessed him to do this song, why not Michael Jackson since he channels him so much. The remake was not appreciated nor was the attempt. For those who say that these remakes helps people remember her, I would say that while she maybe not remembered (herbeing brought up in regular conversation and her music blasting) she definitely will never be forgotten by her true fans and for that her music/legacy is just as alive as when she was here. That is all that matters.

I actually think Marques Houston would have done a better job. To me Omarion has one of those voices that has to have beats MADE to handle his voice and this beat does NOT.

Don’t like this cover. This song was made to go around Aaliyah’s unique voice, and is not meant to be oversung.

It’s a tricky business covering her songs because of how unique her voice is. I think people should think first before they cover. A cover should enhance the original song’s reputation, not tarnish it.

Like Omarion said at the beginning, he’s paying homage. He’s not trying to do the song better than Aaliyah, that was never his intention. It’s not even for an official album release. Of course Liyah’s version is better, it’s HER song. Look at it this way; at least The-Dream and Omarion are keeping her legacy alive and make sure she will not be forgotten.

…but I have to admit, listening to Omarion’s interpretation of the song made me realize just how damn good the original is. No one can put it down the way Aaliyah did. It’s not called One in a Million for no reason.
